In memory of Thora Hird

It’s our plan to have a bronze statue tribute to Thora created and installed in her hometown as a lasting memorial and further add to the growing resurrection of Morecambe’s fortunes as a visitor destination in Northern England.
In 1999, fellow Morecambe entertainment legend, Eric Morecambe was memorialized on Morecambe Promenade in the form of the now iconic Eric Morecambe Statue. Since then Eric’s statue has garnered attention, praise and love from people all over the world.
The site chosen for Thora’s statue is where her journey began – Royalty Place, Morecambe, the site of the former Royalty Theatre.
The image chosen to the inspiration for the new statue is of Thora in 1956, relaxing in a seaside deck chair with Music Hall and fellow northern entertainer and comedian Albert Modley.
Her relaxed yet elegant pose will be the perfect image for her statue.
