Thomas Stevens - Grave Restoration Fund

Donation protected
Thomas Stevens holds a special place in the history of cycling. Thomas was the first cyclist to ride around the world. He did so from 1884 to 1886 on a Columbia Highwheel Bicycle.

The Friends of Thomas Stevens are looking to raise awareness of Thomas Stevens' achievements, maintain his grave, and organize an annual worldwide remembrance.

Thomas Stevens' grave at St Marylebone Cemetery, East Finchley (Plot: G17/79) needs some work done. We would like to do this work in spring 2025, provided, we can secure funding.

We would like to correct the subsidence to front left corner of the grave, and have it thoroughly cleaned, including the lettering. Additionally, we would like to amend the lettering of Thomas Stevens birthdate to the correct date of 24th December 1854.

Phase 1 of the work on the grave would be done in two visits and includes:

Stabilising and levelling.
Re-enamel the lettering.
Add lettering to change to the correct birthdate.
Professional cleaning.

We have been quoted for this work at just under £1000, which is therefore our current target for this specific project. All funding and expenditure will be audited and overseen by the Treasurer of The Pickwick Bicycle Club.

This will be phase 1 of the work. In phase 2 we will be raising additional funds to add a memorial plaque or slab to the grave commemorating Thomas' achievements.
