Monica was just living her life as a working wife, mother to two sons, and caregiver to her 87 year old father. You could find her active in the Birmingham, AL community and working 18 years in real estate as an Associate Broker with TMI Real Estate, being a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc, and Jack and Jill Associates. In December of 2020 that all changed when her world was shattered when she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Prior to her diagnosis she gave her all and worked 10 hour days in real estate. In November she was happy living her life and began to experience numbness in her arms and chest pain. She initially thought it was a heart attack when she went to the doctor and was told everything was fine after tests were run.
Two weeks later as the symptoms persisted, she was told to go to the ER. It was there they discovered she had fluid build up around her heart. Two days after Christmas 2020 upon further testing she was diagnosed with AML. She was informed that the cancer had invaded 70% of her blood and she proceeded to be hospitalized for 7 weeks.
Cancer did not run in her family, nor did she know of anyone who had experienced a similar situation. To be diagnosed with AML was a foreign experience for her to come to grips with all it entails and how to fight it. Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is an aggressive blood and bone marrow cancer. AML begins in your bone marrow; but most often it quickly moves into the blood, as well. It can sometimes spread to other parts of the body including the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and testicles.
There is a cure for blood cancers like AML. Similar to leukemia, lymphoma, and blood disorders like sickle cell disease; that cure is a stem cell or marrow transplant. Most who need a transplant DO NOT have a perfect match within their families. Doctors have checked her immediate family but need a higher match to increase the odds of a successful bone marrow transfer.
The Be The Match Registry was specifically created to help these individuals find the marrow or stem cell match they need. African Americans only have a 23% chance of finding a match, because we only make up 4% of the Be The Match Registry.
Here is how you can help save Monica’s life and others like her.
Please register today to help increase the 4%. Text fight4monica to 61474 or complete your online registration at bethematch.org and have your kit mailed to your home at no cost to you. Once received, simply swab and mail it back.
You may be the cure for someone, like Monica, is looking for.
To help Monica with the additional costs in her fight with AML. This GoFundMe was created to support her as she undergoes this process. While she is receiving her treatment, she is unable to work for 18-24 months. With this loss of income, she will still need to cover out of pocket medical expenses and prescription drugs and medications that are not covered by insurance. As well as help with her non-medical expenses due to her loss of income. She also has a cash app $MonicaYatesMitchell. Fighting AML is difficult and taxing to all who are involved. All we ask is that if able you start where you are and any assistance you can offer, we are grateful for. Share the message of how to help in this fight with your family and friends on social media, become a bone marrow donor, and give. Let’s #fight4monica
