My Uncle, Manuel Martinez III, is a proud U.S. Marine Corps Vet who served in the Vietnam War. It has not been an easy journey for my Uncle, just like it has not been an easy journey for most of my family members. Manuel was enlisted into the Marine Corps by his mother at the age of 17. During his enlistment, his father passed due to complications of alcoholism at the age of 38. Following the completion of his service, Manuel developed PTSD and has struggled with dependency issues for most of his life. In 2017, sadly, we lost his youngest sibling, my Uncle Matt. Matt passed away alone and isolated from our family due to mental health issues and dependency problems. He left behind a home in Illinois that even after our efforts, is still needing several costly repairs. Our goal is to move my Uncle Manuel into this home. However, we must first make these remaining repairs so that the home is habitable. The floors of the home require lifting of floor joist and a new water heater needs to be purchased. Also, some piping needs to be repaired in order to meet code for the water heater installation. We have obtained several bids to complete this work and the most competitive was $2,500 for labor and materials. He will also need a stove and a refrigerator, which we will be purchasing used. Lastly, he will require a moving truck to relocate him from his current (condemned) home to his new home. Please know that our family has never been one to ask for handouts. I’m sure my Uncle Manuel would NEVER approve of this GoFundMe or the sharing of such intimate details regarding his personal life. However, we believe that he deserves these funds and so much more. We humbly ask that you please donate to his relocation. Know that your money is going to a kind, generous, sometimes misunderstood soul, who deserves so much more than the hand this life has dealt him. Thank you in advance for your consideration and kindness!
Humbly,
Melissa Valentine and Michele Martinez-Duncan
