Help This Stray Kitty Get Life Saving Surgery

Donation protected
We live in the Bunker Hill area of Waterbury and we and some of our neighbors feed the many, many stray cats that people abandon in this area. One stray that we nicknamed Drosselmeier has been coming up for food for about six months - our neighbors say they've been seeing Drosselmeier for a year.

On March 1, Drosselmeier came up to our porch to eat, but one of his hind legs was bent backwards behind him.

Unable to leave him outside to watch him suffer and die slowly, we picked him up and brought him to a nearby veterinarian. Drosselmeier was very cooperative with being picked up and was called a "very good boy" by the vets and vet techs that handled him, so he is clearly not feral or semi-feral; very possibly adoptable.

X-rays showed that poor Drosselmeier not only had a broken bone but also a dislocated hip. He was in a lot of pain so he's been given pain medication to help reduce his suffering until he can have surgery.

The veterinarian recommended amputation of his leg as the best recourse. While fusing the hip was also a possibility, it was far, far more costly and had the possibility of failure which may lead to the leg being amputated anyway.

We are asking anyone who is willing to help out this poor cat to assist in the very costly medical bill. We just don't have the resources to take care of it all on our own. We have taken in other cats from outside before and covered all the associated costs ourselves, but we've never found a cat that was hurt this badly before, which has forced our hand in asking assistance.

We also may looking for a home for him as we have already taken in four cats from the neighborhood and don't want to put more pressure and stress on the cats we've already taken in. As near as we can determine, in spite of his friendliness, willingness to take pets, and general lack of fear of people, he is in fact a stray.

Some more views of Drosselmeier - we're keeping him in the cage to prevent him from moving around too much and hurting himself worse.
