THE STORY
This is Trying is a short dramedy about the trials and tribulations of starting a family in today's modern world. We follow the story of Maie and Jack, a young couple desperately trying for children. A lack of success prompts Maie to book the pair into the fertility clinic, but Jack has reservations. He worries that the weight of the discovery will tear their loving relationship apart. Jack attempts to voice his concerns at Maie's sister's baby shower. It is here that Maie and Jack are exposed to adopted families, single parents, and dysfunctional couples. Jack eventually voices his concerns to Maie, and they agree to forget the tests and pursue other, more unconventional ways of creating their dream family.
THE TEAM
Renée Szymanski - Director
By the age of 14, Renée knew she wanted to direct films. She has since created several short films, including a project for the Griffith University GUESTS Program and various screen content at the Queensland University of Technology. Renée is particularly interested in films that explore controversial themes in a light-hearted or unexpected way; that engage and entertain the audience while opening up the conversation around taboo topics. Renée hopes that This is Trying will break down any stereotypes and allow people to talk openly and honestly about infertility in a non-judgemental space.
Indigo Corben - Producer
Indigo has been a movie addict from a young age, but it wasn't until recently that she decided to pursue a career in the film industry. With her interests residing predominantly in pre-production, Indigo has just produced a short documentary about the Whiskey Au Go Go firebombing in 1973 and is keen to continue expanding her skills. She is passionate about creating meaningful and engaging content, with the ultimate goal of reaching a global audience through her work. This is Trying is a film that will inspire community awareness about a taboo topic, precisely the kind of impactful project that Indigo is attracted to.
Emily Holden - Writer
Emily is fuelled by her passion for storytelling, focusing on narratives that feature unique, unexplored and underrepresented characters. Surrounded by books and films from a young age, she has come to appreciate the comedic side of writing. Emily's witty humour has caused her to lean more toward comedy and light-hearted projects while still adding her own artistic flair. Emily has always loved drawing out her audiences' emotions with her writing. This is Trying is an ideal opportunity for her, as it unapologetically displays raw human emotion and connection through a comedic lens.
