My name is Esrom Nyandoro.

I grew up in deep poverty. I come from a family of eight, and we all shared just two rooms. Life was hard, resources were few, and opportunities were almost nonexistent. Like many children across Africa, I played football in dusty streets, often barefoot, without proper equipment. I never owned a pair of soccer boots. All I had was a dream.

That dream carried me far beyond those dusty streets.

I was blessed to represent my national team, including playing for my country at AFCON — and yes, I know many of you will talk about that famous goal. I also had the honour of playing for Mamelodi Sundowns, later becoming a scout, and today a coach with the same club that has carried me for 21 years.

Football became my escape, my hope, and my prayer. Through discipline, faith, and the support of those who believed in me, my life changed.

But today, my heart is with the children who are still where I once was.

There is a child out there right now who cannot fully celebrate Christmas because they are worried about what will happen when January comes — will they go back to school, or will school fees stop their dream?

I have been fortunate to provide my four sons with the best education and opportunities. Now it is my turn to ensure that another child’s prayer is answered, just as mine once was.

Football training and life skills for children across Africa

To show my commitment, I have sold my sentimental jerseys, many signed by the players I shared the field with. My framed AFCON jerseys are still up for sale — because I truly believe in this cause.

For the past five years, I have been doing this work alone, quietly helping where I can. But I have reached a point where I cannot break through the ceiling alone — not when all of you are here with me.

I cannot do this alone.

I truly cannot.

I am asking for your help — wherever you are in the world. Your contribution, no matter how small, can change a child’s future, restore hope, and allow them to walk into January with confidence instead of fear.
