Hello, My Name is Charles York and on August 29, 2021, I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal disease and I need a new kidney.
I had led what I thought was a typical healthy life up until that fateful day. I had moved out of state to live with the love of my life, got a new job. Things were going great!!!! I had no idea that I was born with a Genetic defect. All my life I was unaware that my kidneys were unable to function properly. Until I landed in the ER with a myriad of unexplainable symptoms.
The diagnosis was a complete slap in the face. My kidneys were failing. It was scary. I don’t think anyone ever expects to be told they have a life threatening illness. What is going to happen next? There were so many questions.
After lots of tests it turns out my Diagnosis comes from a rare genetic defect where the basement membrane in my kidneys is too thin and basically my kidneys aren't able to filter my blood properly so the wastes stays in my system.
I now have a catheter in my chest and ongoing dialysis 3 times a week. (6am sharp, thank goodness I’m a morning person). While glad to be alive it’s been a hard road to recovery. Its a hard reality when you realize that you can’t work in your current state of health, that you have medical bills and expenses you weren’t expecting and that the rent is still due. My girlfriend has been amazing and at my side helping any way she can, but even with her working overtime we just can’t make ends meet at this present time.
That’s where we are hoping that the generosity of family, friends, and even complete strangers can help us get through this financial hardship. We don’t want to lose our apartment, while drowning in debt. We need help to make it through this rough patch. We were blindsided by the diagnosis and the wave of debt that has come with it.
I will need another surgery this coming November to switch from Hemodialysis to Peritoneal Dialysis. The costs keep adding up. It’s overwhelming.
We have filed for help with housing and help with medical costs but we were told it will take at least 3-4 months to kick in. We don't have a few months. We really need the funds for rent and utilities. Getting evicted is the last thing we want to think about. Being able to afford medications and care is essential.
Your donation would mean a lot to us.
We will appreciate it with all of our hearts.
Much love and thanks for your time and generosity,
Charles and Alexa
