Lost in the fire
Donation protected
NYC. Upper East Side. At 3:30am on Thursday October 27th, I was awakened by loud shouts on the street: "Fire! Everybody get out!" In a sleep induced haze, I put a coat on my pajamas and ventured outside. Five minutes later firetrucks approached. What I didn't know then, was that firefighters were facing a powerful 6-alarm fire that spread to the adjoining buildings, displacing approximately 40 people/families, including me. One person was killed in the fire, and five were injured.
I'm physically ok, but my landlord has decided to condemn my building due to extensive damage. I am now looking for a new place to stay, to be able to start working again and lead a normal life. Most of my belongings are still inside the apartment and are quite seriously damaged. I'm not sure when or if I will be able to retrive my things, and some of them are probably too damaged anyway.
I've been comforted by the kindness, the prayers and the support of strangers, family, friends, and co-workers. I am thankful and moved by it all. But NYC is an expensive and tough place, and with my family scattered across the country, no one can be here to help. After being turned down for emergency food stamps, the possibility of being placed in a shelter drove me to create this page. Any donations from your side will be deeply appreciated and would help me to get back back on my feet.
I thank you in advance for any support!
