Thien "Bogus" Nguyen Medical and Recovery

Donation protected
On Saturday, May 25th of Memorial Weekend, my best friend for over two decades, Thien Nguyen (affectionately known as "Bogus"), sustained a severe neck injury in Austin, TX while attending a child's birthday party with his girlfriend at an indoor playground.

The accident occurred when his head was impacted against a support beam of a double slide, causing fractures to his C3-C6 vertebrae which form the base of the skull down to the shoulders. Thien experienced immediate paralysis from the neck down and was required an emergency surgery to remove the broken bones in order to place a metal shield for support. After a grueling 8 hours of surgery, he was able to regain some sensation in his limbs, fingers and toes, but he has not succeeded in movement yet.

Thien is currently recovering in the intensive care unit at St. David’s Medical Center in Round Rock, TX. Though doctors estimate a year's time frame of intensive therapy to preserve his neurological functions and alleviate the pain, they are optimistic with an 85% chance of Thien making a full recovery.

Those who know Thien intimately will gladly vouch that he is a fiercely loyal, caring and selfless friend who carries an upbeat, humorous disposition—always ready to give a helping hand to those in need and making people feel like they matter. Even in the midst of this tragic incident, he was more concerned about the stress that would be placed upon his family instead of his own circumstance. Thien will undoubtedly need prayers, support and funds to help him on this challenging journey to recovery.

This fund is organized and managed by me, Anthony Nguyen, who views Thien Nguyen as a biological brother. I humbly ask for your donations on behalf of Thien and his parents to assist with all aspects of his treatment, from the cost of surgery to the therapy to follow. Thien's mother has recently suffered two strokes (which has limited her quality of life), while his father is currently battling hepatic cirrhosis. This financial burden of medical care for the Nguyen family has also caused depression and anxiety on his younger brother who is doing his best to keep the family afloat. Thien's automotive business has suffered some financial instability, as well—due to his absence—and his team are doing their best to bring more work in to keep the lights on. We are all on board for the Nguyens, but they still need your help!

No matter how large or small the donation, your act of compassion towards Thien will go a long way to help him and his family. Please keep them in your prayers, and we will forever be grateful for your kindness.

Donations can also be made through Paypal at [email redacted] and venmo at eight2otwo.

Update on June 14, 2019:

The Nguyens are incredibly overwhelmed by your support for Thien and greatly appreciate it! Some great news: Thien is gaining slight mobility in his arms but has not succeeded in feeding himself yet.

Update on June 19, 2019:
Thank you for your incoming support and encouragement! Thien was recently denied a transfer from Round Rock, TX to his native home of Houston, TX to receive physical therapy due to insurance discrepancies. It is currently costing $1500 per day to keep him there for physical therapy; however, we hope to transfer him to St. David in Austin, TX this week to lower costs.
