Rebuilding Hope: A Future for Our Children After Hurricane Melissa
My name is Lloyd Carter, and today I am reaching out with a heavy heart, but with unwavering hope. I am raising funds to rebuild Thicketts Basic School, the only early childhood education center serving our small community in Jamaica—a place that, until recently, was filled with laughter, learning, and the bright promise of our youngest children.
On the day Hurricane Melissa swept across our island as a devastating Category 5 storm, our school, our children’s safe haven, was completely destroyed. The roof was torn away. Classrooms were flooded. Books, learning materials, furniture, playground equipment, everything we relied on to nurture our children, were lost in a matter of hours. What once stood as a vibrant space of growth and discovery is now only rubble and memories.
For our community, this school was more than a building. It was the heart of our village. It was where children took their first steps toward literacy, where parents found support, and where teachers helped shape the future of an entire generation. Without it, families are now left with no place for their children to learn, grow, or simply feel safe during the day. Many parents have no alternative, and many children now face the risk of falling behind during the most critical years of early development.
This is why your support matters so deeply.
Every dollar raised will go directly toward rebuilding our school from the ground up. Funds will be used to:
* Repair and construct a safe, hurricane-resilient roof and classrooms.
* Replace books, learning materials, and early childhood educational supplies.
* Purchase desks, chairs, and age-appropriate furniture
* Restore our playground and outdoor learning spaces.
* Create a safer, stronger environment that can withstand future storms.
Rebuilding this school is not just about restoring a building, it is about restoring hope. It is about giving our children the stability, education, and joy they deserve after experiencing such trauma and loss. It is about ensuring that even in the face of disaster, their dreams remain within reach.
I am asking for your compassion, your generosity, and your belief in the power of community. Together, we can give these children back the place where their futures begin. Together, we can rise from the ruins and rebuild something even stronger.
Thank you for standing with us in this moment of need. Your support means more than words can express.
