Hello, my name is Mariela Adame and I want to share the story of Karla Castellón Mejía, a 22-year-old young woman who, despite having faced a very painful loss in her childhood, continues fighting every day with faith, hope, and courage.

I first learned about Karla’s story on April 9, 2021, in a segment on Primer Impacto, where she shared her need to pay for her college tuition. Since then, we have been in constant communication through text messages and video calls on WhatsApp.

Below, I share with you Karla’s message in her own words:

Hello, my name is Karla Castellón Mejía. I am 22 years old and I am a strong and determined young woman living with a disability.

When I was only 7 years old, I lost both of my arms in a tragic accident in which I also lost my mother. I lost my right arm from the shoulder and my left arm from the elbow. Everything happened because I was caught in the middle of a crossfire between armed gang members here in my country, El Salvador.

Since that day, I have had to learn to do everything without hands. I currently use a hook prosthesis, but it is neither functional nor advanced.

That is why I ask for your help: my dream is to have two advanced prostheses that will allow me to live independently and with dignity. These prostheses are very expensive, and unfortunately I do not have the financial resources to pay for them.

I ask for your support to be able to:

Buy two advanced prostheses

Continue my studies

Excel as a professional

Fulfill my dreams and live a full and independent life

Every day is a challenge, but I move forward with strength, faith, and determination. I firmly believe that with God’s help and your generosity, I will achieve this goal and prove that a disability is not a barrier to move forward in life.

This amount will help cover two advanced bionic prostheses, as well as transportation for two people, since the beneficiary needs to be accompanied by a family member. It is important to mention that there will be three round trips, from San Salvador, El Salvador to Lima, Peru. Meals and basic expenses are also included, considering the time she will be away from work, with a minimum of 40 business days required.

Hola, mi nombre es Mariela Adame y quiero compartir la historia de Karla Castellón Mejía, una joven de 22 años que, a pesar de haber enfrentado una pérdida muy dura en su niñez, sigue luchando cada día con fe, esperanza y valentía.

Conocí la historia de Karla el 9 de abril del 2021 en el programa Primer Impacto, cuando fue presentada compartiendo su necesidad de pagar sus estudios universitarios. Desde entonces hemos estado en comunicación constante por mensajes de texto y videollamadas en WhatsApp.

Hola, mi nombre es Karla Castellón Mejía. Tengo 22 años y soy una joven fuerte y decidida que vive con una discapacidad.

Cuando tenía solo 7 años, perdí los brazos en un trágico accidente en el que también perdí a mi madre. Perdí el brazo derecho desde el hombro y el brazo izquierdo desde el codo. Todo ocurrió porque me vi atrapada en medio de un tiroteo de pandilleros armados aquí en mi país, El Salvador.

Desde ese día, he tenido que aprender a hacer todo sin manos. Actualmente uso una prótesis con gancho, pero no es funcional ni avanzada.

Por eso pido su ayuda: mi sueño es poder tener dos prótesis avanzadas que me permitan vivir de forma independiente y con dignidad. Estas prótesis son muy costosas, y lamentablemente no cuento con los recursos económicos necesarios para pagarlas.

Este dinero cubrirá dos prótesis biónicas avanzadas, así como el transporte para dos personas, ya que la beneficiaria requiere ir acompañada de un familiar. Cabe mencionar que serán tres viajes redondos, ida y vuelta, desde San Salvador, El Salvador hasta Lima, Perú. Se incluyen comidas y gastos básicos, considerando el tiempo que no asistirá a su trabajo, siendo 40 días hábiles mínimos el tiempo invertido.
