Like many of us, having a birthday during a pandemic, a revolution, and a historic presidential election year has restled up many emotions. My 27th revolution around the sun has me reflecting on my personal journey, and my place in the larger context of our current times.
I recently had an awesome opportunity to show my first collection during NYFW, but declined. Fashion has always been my voice, and as an artist, I believe it's my duty to respond to what is transpiring all around us. It is far more valuable to me that I use my voice and share my art without restraint, without limits, at a time where the world needs healing.
It has me thinking about how I got here, how we got here, and my story starts with where I'm from, Memphis TN. Of Vietnamese refugees, being the only child of five to be born in America, let alone in a city with such rich roots, has always been something I’ve been proud of. My family came from war. A controversial war during controversial times. A war that took precedence over the civil rights legislation and dominated congressional attention.
However, if it were not for the diligence, bloodshed, and activism of Black people, I would not have been afforded the same human rights that we all deserve. I also would not have found bravery and pride in being my whole authentic self when everything around me made me feel like a pariah. It is often overlooked that the Black community and the Asian community have had many parallel experiences. I want to use my art to highlight the beauty. The ugly. The resilience. And the strength of our communities.
But I need your help. For my birthday, I’m asking for $2700 to help with some of the production costs for the fashion show. I’m hoping that through “A Peril” we can come together in solidarity and ease the tension between the Black and Asian community and support our collective efforts to heal those deep wounds.
Thank you so much in advance for your donation, for sharing, and even your time reading this. I can’t wait to share my project with you!
