About

Théâtre d’à Côté is a Montreal-based independent theatre company that specializes in both classical and contemporary theatre, co-founded by emerging artists and 2023 Dawson Theatre graduates Justin Côté and Clara Havro Costa. Fresh off the heels of the 2024 Ste-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival with ‘Shakespeare and the Pearly Gates’, we proudly present our second theatrical production, ‘Thespis’, a new play written by Justin Côté, directed by Clara Costa and co-produced with The Three Tumbleweeds!

The Three Tumbleweeds is the fake theatre name used by Sam Beaton one time for a Fringe project long ago. After reapplying to the Montreal Fringe once more, he realized he needed another fake company name and, feeling original, he decided to use the exact same one. Sam Beaton is a bilingual actor, writer and producer based in Montreal, having created and starred in film, TV, and theatre productions.

Production Team

Director/Producer/Actor: Clara Costa

Clara Costa is a vibrant multidisciplinary artist from Brazil and a graduate from Dawson College's Professional Theatre Program. Credits include: Ophelia in Shakespeare and The Pearly Gates (Theatre D'a Cote/FringeMTL), Boal In Montreal (MBC Productions/Teesri Duniya), Electra in The Oresteia (Dawson College), Ensemble in Grease (WISTA) and Silvia in the upcoming short-film Blue (Odd Place Studios). Through her story-telling, Clara hopes to inspire others by giving life to those parts of themselves that go unexpressed and unnoticed.

Directing Mentor: Jean-Paul Osta

Jean-Paul Osta is an actor, director, and theatre facilitator with an MA in Actor Training and is currently pursuing a 2nd MA in Drama Therapy. Based in Montreal, he has worked extensively with NGOs, using theatre as a tool for empowerment, social change, and community engagement. Jean-Paul believes in the transformative power of theatre, not only as an artistic medium but as a means to foster dialogue, personal growth, and societal change. He has led numerous performances addressing social issues, encouraging participants to explore their voices and identities through storytelling and performance. He performed in the world premiere of the Arabic opera Antar wa Abla and participated in the Lebanese National Theater Festival in 2019.

Stage Manager: Shane Nichol

Shane Nichol is a graduate of the Dawson College Professional Theatre Program in Acting. In 2017-2018 Shane got back into theatre by stage managing two plays for Lakeshore Players Dorval. Next Shane would work with Labyrinth Stage Productions as a stage manager for their production “Daughters of Mile end” directed by Rachelle Glait. Shane then wrote, directed, and acted in “The Get Together” which would be MapsCastle Productions first production. MapsCastle is a production house Shane founded to create new theatre. Shane then got involved as a stage manager with Voices of Asia International with the amazing play “Would Virginia Woolf contemplate suicide if she were Filipino” directed by Dennis Gupa and Written by Revan Badingham III. This started as a production for the Montreal Fringe festival that later would go on to festivals in Ottawa and Vancouver. During that time Shane began to write “ ‘Twas the first Christmas in July after Covid”. Currently Shane is working on two projects, the first is for Voices of Asia international helping with a workshop for a new play. The second is “Thespis” written by Justin Côté and directed by Clara Costa for Théâtre d’à Côté.

Producer: Sam Beaton

Sam Beaton is a bilingual actor, writer and creator from small-town Coaticook, QC, and is currently living and based in big-city Montreal. Sam made the move to become an actor and studied at Dawson College’s Professional Theatre Program, which he graduated from in 2021. During his time there, Sam developed a love for writing which eventually led to his first written work titled Saltzman’s Antiques which premiered at the Montreal Theatre Fringe Festival in 2022. Since then, Sam has gone on and created an absolute slew of projects working as the writer, producer, and actor. Some of his credits include: The Mother Is Dead (2023); A short film about grief and inheritance, which Sam wrote, produced and acted in. The Whispers of Grief (2024); A collective creation produced and performed for the Mont Royal Cemetery in Montreal, which Sam co-wrote and performed in. Runner’s (2025); A tv-demo that follows a non-binary PA trying to make it big as a filmmaker, which Sam produced.

Producer/Playwright/Actor: Justin Côté

Justin Côté is a bilingual Montreal-based actor, writer, producer and a 2023 graduate from Dawson College’s Professional Theatre program. As an artist, he strives to inspire both himself and others through compelling storytelling in the performing and visual arts; he has various scripts in development, with a particular passion for rich and provocative character-driven narratives that delve into the complexities of human behavior and society. He is also the co-founder and current artistic director of the Montreal-based indie theatre company Théâtre d’à Côté; they recently debuted their inaugural production of his first original play, Shakespeare and the Pearly Gates, at the 2024 Ste-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival. Past performance credits include Hamlet in Shakespeare and the Pearly Gates, Joseph K in The Trial, Malcolm in Macbeth and Johnnypateenmike in The Cripple of Inishmaan.

Set & Costume Designer: Keren Amiga

Keren Amiga is a Montreal based live arts and performance designer. After recently graduating Concordia University’s Scenography program, Keren is continuing to pursue a profession in performance design and is very excited to be a part of Montreal's 2025 Fringe Festival while working at Théâtre d’à Côté for the first time. Thespis demonstrates the power of performing arts, and the power that one quiet voice can have amidst the loud. Previous productions include: Mother Courage, Concordia Theatre (Costume Design), 14 Way to Screw Up your College Interview, Selwyn House, School for Boys (Production Design) Current Productions: Tuck Everlasting, Segal Center of Performing Arts (Production Design).

Social Media Marketer: Emilie Rachel

Emilie Rachel is a Canadian-Latina artist who was born and raised in Montréal. She graduated from Dawson Professional Theatre program back in 2023 since then she has dwelled into theatre and film. She is currently in the pursuit of expanding her art and creativity and pushing herself into places that seem unfamiliar to her and dwelling into different types of visual art. As well, she is continuing to expand her learning from directing and writing and has a few projects she’s been working on and is excited to share with the world. Other than acting, she has obtained her certificate in Social Media Marketing from Concordia University this year and is currently helping actors and businesses with their socials with the goal to help push people’s social media forward and try to achieve a powerful online presence. She wants to help people connect the dots between who they are and how they show up online genuinely, creatively, and with intention.

Cast

Actor: Lisa McCormack, "Esther"

Lisa's goal is to bring life to characters through emotional depth and the complexity of the human spirit and to tell stories that make you feel and think. She prides herself on the range of characters she is able and fortunate enough to get to play. Recent performances included the popular Dinner and a Show from last year's Fringe Festival and The Anorak where she took on her first full length solo performance. Lisa is incredibly excited to bring this play to life and feels blessed to get to work with all these talented humans!

Actor: Kreg Weiss, "Roger"

Kreg Weiss is an actor based in Montreal. Originally from the west coast, he spent 20+ years as a yoga guide. He transitioned to being a story-teller on screen and stage having performed in dozens of fulfilling collaborations. His more recent engagements include an upcoming principal role on a new Apple TV series and roles in 2 television movies. He is grateful for every opportunity to bring life to a story and to take the audience on a journey with his characters.

Actor: Megan Roche, "Tina"

With both her parents being involved in the industry, theatre has been a part of Megan's life for as long as she can remember. On top of being a performer, she is also a Shakespeare enthusiast and has found a great passion for discussing and deliberating over Shakespeare. Megan is a recent graduate from The Professional Theatre program at Dawson College and is incredibly excited to be taking part in Shakespeare Canada's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Actor: Antonella Ruffolo, "Claire"

Montreal-born actress Antonella Ruffolo is a graduate of the Dawson Professional Theatre Program. Over the years she has garnered herself the title of consummate auditionee. With most of her work being namely in video games when MOCAP burst onto the Montreal video game scene in the early 2000— her credits include Rainbow Six Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry Wii and Splinter Cell 5 Conviction. She has also worked in short films, select commercials, feature projects and more recently graced the unconventional stage in Montreal’s rendition of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, playing the crazy ex in Joe & Mary’s Wedding, an interactive dinner theatre experience. Moreover, she has put her voice to select corporate narrations and desires to further break into the voice industry in animation and advertising. As she also has a passion for continuing education, Antonella obtained a B.A in Languages, with a Major in Spanish, allowing her to speak four languages; and a Graduate Diploma in Communications. Lastly, her passion for the Arts doesn’t stand on its own as she credits all things to the true Creator, following him in her never-ending quest to channel her creativity and grow as all things are possible through Him. This will be Antonella’s second Fringe Festival performance.

Message From Our Director - Clara Costa

"With 'Thespis', I hope to expose the audience to the mechanisms and traps of totalitarianism. In such regimes, oppression operates not only in its broadest form—within the structure of society—but also in interpersonal relationships and individual consciousness. Today, with the vast amount of information available online, it is easier than ever to form judgments based on a shallow understanding. However, Thespis invites you to look deeper—into the nuances and circumstances of those living within a totalitarian community. For them, the choice between freedom and survival is far more complex than it seems. Leaders can be incredibly charismatic and persuasive in their promises and manipulation, making people believe they are their only hope. Fortunately, in this play, they are given another choice. I also want to highlight the power of Art in a world where truth can only be spoken through riddles and whispers. I hope audiences leave the theater with a clearer understanding of what people living under similar conditions endure—with deep empathy and, most importantly, a hunger for justice and dignity for all, no matter where they are."

Le Théâtre d’à Côté est une compagnie de théâtre indépendante basée à Montréal, spécialisée à la fois dans le théâtre classique et contemporain. Elle a été cofondée par deux artistes émergents et diplômés du programme de théâtre professionnel du Collège Dawson en 2023 : Justin Côté et Clara Havro Costa. The Three Tumbleweeds est un nom de compagnie fictif que Sam Beaton a utilisé une fois pour un projet Fringe il y a longtemps. Lorsqu’il a posé sa candidature à nouveau au Fringe de Montréal, il a réalisé qu’il avait besoin d’un autre faux nom de compagnie et, avec beaucoup d’originalité, il a décidé de réutiliser exactement le même. Sam Beaton est un acteur, auteur et producteur bilingue basé à Montréal, ayant créé et joué dans diverses productions de cinéma, de télévision et de théâtre.

Clara Costa est une artiste multidisciplinaire dynamique originaire du Brésil et diplômée du programme de théâtre professionnel du Collège Dawson. Mentor en mise en scène : Jean-Paul Osta 

Jean-Paul Osta est acteur, metteur en scène et animateur théâtral, titulaire d’une maîtrise en formation d’acteur et actuellement candidat à une deuxième maîtrise en dramathérapie. Basé à Montréal, il a travaillé avec de nombreuses ONG, utilisant le théâtre comme outil d’émancipation, de changement social et d’engagement communautaire. Jean-Paul croit au pouvoir transformateur du théâtre, non seulement comme art, mais aussi comme moyen de dialogue, de croissance personnelle et de changement sociétal. Il a dirigé de nombreuses performances sur des enjeux sociaux et a participé à la création de l’opéra arabe Antar wa Abla ainsi qu’au Festival national de théâtre libanais en 2019. 

Régisseur de scène : Shane Nichol 

Shane Nichol est diplômé du programme de théâtre professionnel du Collège Dawson en interprétation. En 2017-2018, il est revenu au théâtre en tant que régisseur pour deux pièces des Lakeshore Players Dorval. Il a ensuite travaillé avec Labyrinth Stage Productions pour Daughters of Mile End mis en scène par Rachelle Glait. Shane a écrit, mis en scène et joué dans The Get Together, la première production de sa propre maison de production, MapsCastle Productions. Il a également collaboré avec Voices of Asia International pour Would Virginia Woolf Contemplate Suicide if She Were Filipino, qui a voyagé du Fringe de Montréal à Ottawa et Vancouver. Aujourd’hui, Shane participe à l’atelier d’une nouvelle pièce avec Voices of Asia et travaille sur Thespis pour Théâtre d’à Côté.

Ses réalisations comprennent The Mother Is Dead (2023), The Whispers of Grief (2024), une création collective pour le cimetière Mont-Royal, et Runner’s (2025), un projet télévisuel explorant la vie d’un assistant de production non-binaire.

Keren Amiga est une conceptrice de spectacles basée à Montréal. Récemment diplômée du programme de scénographie de l’Université Concordia, elle poursuit une carrière dans la conception pour les arts vivants. Enthousiaste à l’idée de faire ses débuts avec Théâtre d’à Côté pour le Fringe 2025, elle célèbre à travers Thespis la puissance de l’art scénique et l’impact d’une voix discrète au milieu du tumulte. Parmi ses projets antérieurs : Mother Courage (costumes, Théâtre Concordia), 14 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview (conception, Selwyn House School). Elle travaille actuellement sur Tuck Everlasting (Segal Centre, conception). 

Responsable marketing numérique : Emilie Rachel 

Emilie Rachel est une artiste canado-latino-américaine née et élevée à Montréal. Diplômée du programme de théâtre professionnel du Collège Dawson en 2023, elle explore désormais le théâtre, le cinéma et les arts visuels. En plus de sa carrière artistique, elle a obtenu une certification en marketing des médias sociaux à l’Université Concordia. Elle aide aujourd’hui des acteurs et entreprises à optimiser leur présence en ligne, cherchant à connecter l’identité personnelle à l’expression numérique de manière authentique et créative.

Elle est fière de la variété de rôles qu’elle a eu la chance d’interpréter. Parmi ses performances récentes : Dinner and a Show lors du dernier Fringe Festival, ainsi que The Anorak où elle a tenu son premier rôle solo dans une pièce complète. Lisa est incroyablement enthousiaste à l’idée de donner vie à Thespis et se sent privilégiée de travailler avec une équipe aussi talentueuse !

Kreg Weiss est un acteur basé à Montréal. Originaire de la côte ouest, il a consacré plus de 20 ans à guider des pratiques de yoga avant de se tourner vers la narration sur scène et à l’écran. Il a participé à de nombreuses collaborations artistiques enrichissantes. Récemment, il a obtenu un rôle principal dans une nouvelle série Apple TV et a joué dans deux téléfilms. Kreg est reconnaissant de chaque opportunité de donner vie à une histoire et de faire voyager le public à travers ses personnages.

Le théâtre fait partie de la vie de Megan depuis son enfance grâce à l’implication de ses parents dans le milieu. En plus d’être interprète, Megan est une grande passionnée de Shakespeare, aimant discuter et analyser ses œuvres. Diplômée récemment du programme de théâtre professionnel du Collège Dawson, elle est ravie de participer à A Midsummer Night’s Dream avec Shakespeare Canada.

Née à Montréal, Antonella Ruffolo est diplômée du programme de théâtre professionnel du Collège Dawson. Elle a principalement travaillé dans l’industrie du jeu vidéo avec des rôles en capture de mouvement dans Rainbow Six Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry Wii et Splinter Cell 5 Conviction. Elle a également joué dans des courts-métrages, des publicités, des longs-métrages et a récemment rejoint la scène théâtrale alternative dans Joe & Mary’s Wedding, une expérience théâtrale interactive. Antonella prête aussi sa voix à diverses narrations corporatives et aspire à percer davantage dans le doublage en animation et en publicité. Passionnée d’apprentissage, elle détient un baccalauréat en langues (majeure en espagnol) et un diplôme d’études supérieures en communication. Elle attribue sa créativité et ses accomplissements à sa foi, qui nourrit son parcours artistique.

Message de notre metteure en scène – Clara Costa 

 « Avec Thespis, je souhaite exposer les mécanismes et les pièges du totalitarisme. Dans de tels régimes, l’oppression ne s’exerce pas seulement à travers les grandes structures sociales, mais aussi dans les relations interpersonnelles et dans la conscience individuelle. Aujourd’hui, avec la surabondance d’informations disponibles en ligne, il est plus facile que jamais de porter des jugements superficiels. Pourtant, Thespis vous invite à plonger plus profondément — à découvrir les nuances et les réalités vécues par ceux qui évoluent dans une communauté totalitaire. Pour eux, le choix entre la liberté et la survie est bien plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît. Les dirigeants peuvent se montrer incroyablement charismatiques et persuasifs dans leurs promesses et leur manipulation, amenant les gens à croire qu’ils sont leur seul espoir. Heureusement, dans cette pièce, une autre voie leur est offerte. Je souhaite aussi mettre en lumière le pouvoir de l’Art dans un monde où la vérité ne peut être dite qu’à travers des énigmes et des murmures. J’espère que les spectateurs repartiront du théâtre avec une compréhension plus profonde de ce que vivent les personnes sous de tels régimes — avec plus d’empathie, et surtout, avec une faim de justice et de dignité pour tous, partout dans le monde. »
