THIS IS A NEW CAMPAIGN--NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH A DIFFERENT CAMPAIGN SET UP EARLIER.
My newly published historical fiction book, THE SOUTHERN PHOENIX, addresses the Black experience in America during the last century. It has been receiving 5-star reviews on Amazon. There is talk about making it into a television mini-series. In the meantime, a series on You Tube will soon be available where you can watch me interviewed and see me read portions of the book--some funny, others very dramatic.
As a teacher by profession, I realized some years ago how little many of our students (let alone adults) knew about their own history. For instance, if I asked about Martin Luther King, Jr., many would know that he was a leader, marched, and was assassinated but little beyond that. I soon realized the need to fill the gap in an easy-to-read story.
I was inspired to begin writing this book many years ago when I was visiting my husband's relatives Down South. Below is a quick summary:
THE SOUTHERN PHOENIX is initially set in rural Alabama during the Jim Crow Era. The main character, John David Johnson (affectionately known as Ba' Bro') faced extreme adversities, not atypical of what millions of other Black men (and women) endured in the South and elsewhere during that time. He broke the Southern Code on more thn one occasion and succeeded in eventually becoming a civil right attorney and a social justice advocate. As unlikely as many might have expected, he rose, like a Phoenix, to become a pillar of society and a role model for his and future generations.
