The Shot tells the story of Leonard Jefferson, who is known for capturing "The Last Picture of Tupac Shakur."

On September 7th, 1996, a man named Leonard Jefferson sold his own Tyson vs Seldon fight tickets in a Vegas casino lobby to make a quick two grand. He took his profit to wager at the craps table. Hours later, driving alone to grab a pizza, he stopped at a red light on Las Vegas Blvd and found himself staring at some shiny chrome wheels on a black BMW; inside sat Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight.

Leonard, being an acquaintance of Tupac, had a brief conversation before asking to take the photo. Tupac looked into the camera, the shutter clicked, the light changed green, and we all know what transpired next.

On September 7th, 1996, lives were forever changed.

Six days later, Tupac Shakur died in the hospital. Leonard Jefferson's photograph became the last image ever taken of one of the most prolific artists in American history.

Why Now?

We are approaching the 30th anniversary of Tupac's death, and the world has spent three decades mythologizing him: the conspiracy theories, the posthumous albums, the murals, the documentaries built around his death.

What almost nobody has told is the story of the photograph itself, and the man behind the lens who has carried that brief encounter for thirty years. This isn't a Tupac biopic. It's the story of one of the last people to have an encounter and a conversation with him before he passed. That's a story that's never been dramatized, and it deserves to be, especially now.

The Film

THE SHOT is a pressure cooker. We want the tension where every scene feels like it's building toward a collision it can't avoid. Vegas at night, the casino floor, the dice table, the traffic light that won't turn green fast enough. Long, unbroken takes that trap the audience in real time alongside Leonard, so that by the time the shutter clicks, they are holding their breath.

But underneath that intensity, this is a film about a person. That's where the tone shifts into something quieter, the surreal pressing up against the mundane the way it does in real life. A man buying a pizza. A man counting cash under a casino light. A man who has no idea he is about to become a footnote in history, and who has spent thirty years trying to reckon with what that means. That tension between spectacle and intimacy, between Tupac's legacy and Leonard's humanity, is the beating heart of this film.

Writer and director Cole Swanson has a clear, specific vision for how to bring this life-altering evening to the screen, the one night in 1996 Las Vegas that occurred in Leonard Jefferson's life, and we don't want that vision to sit any longer than it has to.

We're planning to cast familiar faces and are building this with real festival ambitions, aiming not just for a top-tier festival run but for NAACP Image Award and Academy Award consideration.
