The Refuge is a place designated for rest and restoration for child survivors of sex trafficking. Some common facts about sex trafficking of women & girls are shown below.
The Refuge for DMST (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking) is developing The Refuge Ranch, a long-term, residential, therapeutic ranch for girls, ages 11-17, who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. Located on 50 acres in a beautiful and restorative setting outside of Austin, Texas, The Refuge Ranch will provide trauma-informed holistic care for the girls on-site, including: a University of texas Charter School program, medical care and various therapeutic programs uniquely designed for the development of a child survivor. Slated to open in the Winter of 2016, The Refuge Ranch will be one of the only long-term, live-in rehabilitation facilities for child survivors of sex trafficking in the United States. Sex trafficking is a form of slavery, and it is most common for people to try and disregard the idea that slavery still exists today, but it does, and bigger than ever before, as more than 2.5 million people around the world are enslaved at any time.

The biggest issue facing the victims’ chances of survival and recovery is the lack of awareness surrounding their issue. In the U.S. alone, there are about 100,000 victims enslaved into sex trafficking every year, and they are most often hidden in plain sight, voiceless and terrified. Currently, there are only 350 beds available in the U.S. to house the victims that are rescued. Simple math makes the issue abundantly clear: less than 0.5% of the victims PER YEAR, in America alone, have access to a safe shelter, and the time for that statistic to change is NOW.

The Refuge is a way to combat the astonishingly low shelter opportunities for the survivors of sex trafficking, and The Refuge needs your help to raise the capital it needs to turn this dream into a reality. As Brooke Crowder, a founder of The Refuge, says "We need a catalyst to bring together all the resources available to encircle a young survivor to give her the best care possible to rebuild her life. That catalyst is The Refuge Ranch."
