The Record (A Short Experimental Drama)

Donation protected
Who we are:

We are a team of young filmmakers based in Scotland. Our film ‘The Record’ is an experimental drama with very specific aims: to address the over-curation of the original 1977 Golden Record and to find discomfort in familiar circumstances.

The set of 115 images was released into space on two golden records held in the Voyagers 1 and 2. On these records were the curation of images and sounds which portraying the “diversity of life and culture” on earth. Yet, as we reflect on this stellar time capsule 43 years after its departure into space, we do not feel a sense of “preservation” or “familiarity” but in fact find a time capsule that leaves us with raised eyebrows.

We want to make a film that distills these sensations and allows us to feel this discomfort within familiar circumstances, and to realise the irony of curating a presentation of our earth that is sensational and untrue.

We intend to produce this comprehensive experimental drama to last approximately 10 minutes. We aim to distribute the film via cinema format and as an immersive installation.

Writer/Director- Molly Simmons
Molly finds great enjoyment in the ability to create engaging worlds for characters to inhabit. Having an extensive background in production design, she is particularly fond of utilising both colour and symbolism to add further texture to creative narratives and particularly enjoys working with experimental design concepts. In her time studying Film + Television Production at the Edinburgh College of Art she has worked on a number of productions with work screening across the UK and Europe. Molly has had work screened on BBC Scotland and STV, with her most recent work on the children’s Short, The Lost Sock, receiving a Royal Television Society Student Craft Award for Production design. She is keen to bring her skills and creativity out in force for this film and looks forward to production !

Administrative Producer- Doug Stephenson

Doug has been in love with film and theatre since an early age. Starting their career as  in acting, Doug took the leap into producing theatre over 3 years ago and is so excited to be returning to Film. Doug has produced multi-award winning publicity, that has received credits from The british institute of professional photography and the Moscow international photography awards, among others. They have also produced into all walks of theatre, from comedy to drama to musicals. Producing this experimental drama is exactly what Doug has been working towards over the last 4 years.

Creative Producer/ Art Director- Molly Firmin

Having worked as a Producer and Production Designer on several shorts in the past, Molly is excited to combine the two in her role as Creative Producer. Molly has a background in Art & Design and is currently in her final year, studying BA Film & Television at Edinburgh College of Art. She aims to bring a creative flair and practical attitude to the team and is excited to immerse the audience in 70s interiors, as the film’s Art Director.

Director of Photography- Stéphanie Ward

Steph has always been part of the camera department since working in film. She is a camera assistant on documentaries and short films, as well as shooting various music videos and short fictions. She enjoys collaborating and sharing creatively with the aim of bringing to life the quirky concept of The Record. The sequential static shots in the film will allow for particular attention to the composition and lighting and will help to create an immersive experience.

Editor- Will Peppercorn

I have an interest in film with families, their diversity, familiarity and the fact that they can be some of the safest and most powerful networks, whilst also being the most dangerous. Previously my films have had some success at festivals. My film Running After was selected for the Bath International Festival, and won Best Student Film at the UK Film Festival London. We Three has recently been nominated for Best Drama at the Scottish Royal Television Society Student Awards.
