There's Something About Mei!

There’s something about Mei that people just can’t enough of. Maybe it’s her smile, maybe it’s her laughter, maybe it’s her shyness, or maybe it’s the goodness in her heart and wanting to help other people. Whatever it is, it just makes us love her that much more and want to be around her all the time. So, Mei Cao is her name and from China she came.

My name is Carmen Ziller, and I am so blessed that Mei came into my life. I met her in 2013; I walked into a nail salon, to get my nails done of course, and there she was, this joyful, charismatic, engaging manicurist who cares so much about others, who wears her heart in her sleeve, and who taught me how easy it is to be joyful, to be thankful, and to care. We instantly became friends and best of friends immediately thereafter. There is only so much family and friends can do or provide especially financially which is why I decided to ask for help through gofundme.

My dear friend Mei, now 40 years old, was diagnosed with stage 3c ovarian cancer in December of 2017 and has not worked since November 2017 when she fell ill.  After going through Chemo, through radiation, and the removal of her ovaries, the cancer was not to be seen. Until October of 2018 when it came spreading to her lungs.  What makes this more heartbreaking is that in 2015 she was pregnant and miscarried after 5 months. Again in 2017 she got pregnant and again she lost the baby after 2 months. Yet she always greeted you with a smile on her face and not a fake one.

When she started falling behind on her bills, of course her true family and friends were there to help, but I told her let’s try gofundme, you cannot manage on your own.  She said no. Six months later I decided to this. She was able to keep her finances up to date with what she had saved and with some help. Mei is presently five months behind on everything. From rent to utilities to credit cards to loans to medical bills and the list goes on.  There’s surely something about Mei when even her landlord, who she owes 5 months rent to, gives her food, takes her to her appointments, and is with her almost 24/7.

Presently Mei is trying to get treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center which is her best chance at recovery but unfortunately they do not accept her insurance and would have to pay out of pocket. We are working with the insurance company and the hospital to see what can be done. Bottom line, our goal is $200,000.00. This would cover her outstanding debts and support her for the next 18 months or so. The funds will go towards her bare necessities like rent, utilities, food, transportation, medical bills, etc.

I tried to keep this short yet, not sure if I did. This is the first time I do something like this. I’m not sure how this will work out, I’m not sure what people will think, I’m not sure if what I wrote makes sense, I’m not sure of many things. What I am sure of is that I needed to do this for my best friend, Mei. I love you Mei!!

Thank you all for your support,

With all the gratitude in the world,

Team Mei.
