My name is Mayda and I am 27 years old. I live in the district of Ancón - Lima, Peru. I was diagnosed at the age of 2 with Hypophosphatemic Renal Rickets, a rare and degenerative disease, which consists of the loss of phosphorus through urine, causing deformation in my bones. This is a disease which requires lifelong treatment. After years of searching, I have finally found a specialist that can perform the surgery to improve my condition and ability to walk, however I need your help to make it a reality.
This is my story:
As a result of this disease, I suffer from constant pain in my bones, I have dental problems and I have already lost hearing in my right ear. Every 3 months I must undergo control tests such as blood, urine, X-rays, among others. My current treatment is to take 12 pills a day. For several years I have been seeking the resources for osteotomy surgeries on my legs to greatly improve my quality of life.
I am constantly researching my disease and learning about my health rights in my country, because even though I have my health insurance, it does not cover my needed surgery. I also haven't been able to find a specialist doctor that can treat my disease and is covered by my insurance.
Despite having ESSALUD worker's health insurance, when I was treated at the Rebaliategui hospital, the medical board of Traumatologists rejected my request for coverage for my surgery, claiming that it was not due to a medical condition, but an aesthetic one. However, if you look at my X-rays I have cracked bones. I came out crying.
I was later advised to undergo treatment at SIS Hospital, so I quit work in order to get health insurance in my country called (SIS). 4 years ago when I was about to be operated on through the SIS, at the Cayetano Heredia Hospital, I was waiting in the operating room, prepared for the intervention, when I was denied coverage for my surgery. I did not understand what happened and what the errors were of the doctors and the authorities such as SUSALUD and REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MINSA to cancel my surgery.
The depression made me withdraw from everything. I withdrew from treatments at hospitals and social groups. I felt destroyed, alone and disappointed by all the specialists who saw my case, I could not imagine that all the time spent managing the operation in the hospital was in vain. Even when I thought that I had found a doctor to help me improve my quality of life, I was only told that my case is complex and that I could not do the osteotomy surgery in my home country of Peru but in Brazil.
I am currently a technician in Industrial Administration and today my health worsened having problems with reduced mobility and I do not walk often due to pain in my bones. I have fallen and have more than two fractures in my bones.
However, I now have hope again as I have found Dr. Raúl Quispe from the Doctor Q. Clinic that has the expertise to perform my operation. In order to do this though I need to raise $15,000 for my first leg osteotomy surgery. The surgery will relieve my need for a cane that I use and reduce muscle aches and help me to avoid scoliosis, which impairs my gait and ability to walk.
# NO IMPOSSIBLE FOR MAYDA
I tell you this because today I need your help, I need you to help share my story. I can only hope to reach many hearts to make my goal of an osteotomy operation come true and thus improve my quality of life. Thank you for reading and for your consideration.
On January 18, 2023, I managed to raise the money for my first surgery at the San Juan de Dios Clinic. I felt happy and sad at the same time, on the one hand I knew that my quality of life would improve and at the same time I would start a slow recovery process and that I should have patience and good humor.
Thank God I have been recovering well and advancing with my physical therapies and waiting for my second surgery on my left leg. This was not possible with your unconditional help.
I attend the therapies 3 times a week, they perform electrotherapy, magnetotherapy and hydrotherapy to date I am recovering sensation in my leg.
The doctor says I should start walking hehehe....and what do you think?
