Gandalf is a Siberian Husky-mix rescue dog that I adopted from the Seal Beach Animal Care Center 6 years ago. We went through training where he got his Canine Good Citizen certification and then we became certified as a therapy dog team. Gandalf has been a volunteer therapy dog for 5 years now.

We’ve visited libraries so the kids can read to the dogs, assisted living facilities, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Downey Kaiser Hospital.

For the past 2 years, we have concentrated on bringing puppy love to the patients, visitors and staff at the Downey Kaiser Hospital. We regularly visit children on the pediatrics floor of the hospital, seeing kids who have all kinds of medical conditions, including children who come for chemotherapy treatment for a variety of cancers.

Gandalf enjoys “talking” by telling everyone “I love you” and howling, which entertains everyone he meets. He frequently throws himself on the floor and whines until the hospital staff give him tummy rubs. He is a great distraction and joy at the hospital to the hard working staff. Gandalf really enjoys spreading love to everyone he meets.

Recently, Gandalf had surgery himself where it was discovered that he has cancer - soft tissue sarcoma. He has seen an oncologist and will be getting a second surgery on December 4th. We are hoping that this surgery will remove the rest of the cancer.

Gandalf’s medical expenses are really adding up.
