On July 30, 2013, our angel was born. Francesca Sammarco was born a healthy 6lb and 3oz. As our princess grew we noticed differences in her and her older brothers. For example, she would not sleep at night and had trouble communicating with others. She would not even speak a word but would only make noises. At 3 years old we took Francesca to Children's Hospital for an evaluation. On that day we received the most heartbreaking news. Francesca was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. We had to face the fact that our only daughter may not only need assistance her whole life but also never communicate her wants and needs.
As Francesca grew older, her sensory disorders became worse. She bites and hits herself when frustrated or any feeling of anxiousness. Her communication impairment causes her to repeat this behavior. Francesca also will not sleep more than three hours a night and tries to run out of the house. She also likes to run away in a store or parking lot. This is frightening for us, but through it all, we see a happy little girl with lots of magnificent personality traits and a strong desire to learn. She works very hard every day to conquer new goals and she never gives up. We have noticed her love for animals especially dogs. She is calm and seems to communicate better around them. For this reason, we are praying Francesca could have her own service/therapy dog. She is a little girl with so much to give. When you meet Francesca I guarantee you will fall in love with her big smile and beautiful spirit that can light up a room. We hope this will be her chance to shine.
