UPDATE:
Our family is incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated to this fundraiser! " Thank You" just doesn't seem to convey our appreciation and heartfelt gratitude enough! The funds have allowed us to get her weekly assistance, which has been great for her and helpful to my dad, who has to care for her full-time, while also trying to take care of himself. It's truly amazing to see how loved our mom is.
Mom had an appointment in May with her liver doctor at Cedars Sinai and we were told that unfortunately, they will not be reversing their decision to allow her to be placed on the transplant list there. This obviously is not what we were hoping to hear, and certainly not what we're willing to accept. We asked about getting another opinion and her doctor said that USC might be the best place to go as they're a bit more aggressive with who they're willing to put on the transplant list. He does not know what will happen but did say he truly hopes they will consider her for transplant. Her doctor said he will put the referral in and get all her records over to a liver doctor at USC. We should find out soon where we are in the process and when we can get her scheduled to see them.
We will be keeping the fundraiser going for the time being so please feel free to share if you can. Again, thank you so very much and please keep our mom in your thoughts!
This is a fundraiser for our mom, Pearl Kimler.
Most probably don't know, but our mom had been experiencing some medical issues back in June/July 2022 and after going to the doctor, it was discovered that she's in liver failure due to non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis (NASH). Because of her condition, she is experiencing memory issues/foggy brain (hepatic encephalopathy), fluid build up (ascites) resulting in needing almost weekly paracentesis, weakness and muscle loss, and a slew of other complications that come along with this disease. She is under the care of a liver team at Cedars Sinai and up until recently, we were told she would be a good candidate for a liver transplant. However, we just learned the other day that due to her physical condition (the weakness and muscle loss), they are not approving her to go on the transplant list because they are concerned her body isn't in a condition to survive the grueling surgery/recovery. They did say however, that if her physical condition were to improve, she can be presented again to the transplant team for consideration. But with her age and the nature of disease progression, time is of the essence. That takes us to the reason for this fundraiser. Through Medicare, our mom can only receive approximately two physical therapy sessions per week at 30 minutes per session, and that's just not going to be enough to build back her strength and give her a fighting chance. Neither of our parents work as our dad is also disabled, and they just don't have the means to pay out of pocket for additional therapy and medical care. Additionally, our mom needs physical assistance to do most daily tasks and the funds can also help pay for a caretaker for an indeterminate amount of hours per day since that is unfortunately not covered by Medicare.
As proud of a woman as our mom is and as much as she wouldn't want us to do this, we need to try anything we can to help her and keep her here for all of us. She has too much life left to live and this disease has already taken too much away from her. Thank you in advance and even if you understandably can't donate, please just keep her in your thoughts!
