Theo is my sweet, remarkably smart boy—and if you know him, you know he has a lot to say. Over time, he’s learned to communicate using buttons with words, and he isn’t shy about using them. His favorite requests are “cookie,” “play,” and most emphatically, “I’m starving!” It’s one of the many ways he’s shown me how aware, expressive, and full of life he is.
Recently, Theo suffered another severe urinary blockage, a life-threatening emergency where the urethra is blocked, preventing urine flow, common in male cats due to their narrow anatomy, requiring immediate vet care to relieve the obstruction and prevent fatal toxin buildup.
In the past, vet visits had been especially frightening for him, and his first blockage caused him lasting distrust of strangers, resulting in him unable to be handled by any vets without sedation since.
Based on his behavior and what felt like a rapid decline, I made the heartbreaking decision to schedule an in-home euthanasia so he could pass peacefully, without the fear and trauma of another emergency hospital visit.
Upon hearing the news, my sister came by to say goodbye—but instead, she gently encouraged me to give Theo one more chance to tell us what he wanted. I placed his carrier near him and waited. Slowly, on his own, Theo made his way inside. Without protest or fear, he allowed me to carry him to the car. In that quiet moment, it was clear he wasn’t ready to say goodbye.
I was only able to get Theo immediate emergency treatment because my sister stepped in and paid for the first part of his care in full. That initial treatment revealed just how severe the blockage was—but also showed that his bloodwork was strong and that he still had so much life left in him. To cover the cost of the two-night hospital stay, I was forced to take out a $4,500 loan, and my sister again showed incredible generosity by covering the down payment so I could avoid the burden of future APR costs.
The experience was overwhelming for both of us, especially Theo, but it led to a new possibility. The veterinary team shared that there is a surgery that could permanently resolve Theo’s urinary issues and help him avoid future emergencies—giving him the chance at a comfortable, safe life without another terrifying hospital visit.
