Theo's Last Minute Gender Affirming Surgery Support

Hi, I’m Theo, your local queer artist.

I never imagined I’d have to share my medical struggles or ask for financial help openly, but here we are. For 26 years of my life, I’ve been working hard to live as my true self. As a nonbinary transmasc person, I have been planning my top surgery for the past 10 years—a critical step toward aligning my body with my identity. After all the effort put into this journey in the past years, I finally have my surgery scheduled for March 18. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I now find myself at a crossroads: I need support now more than ever to make this life-changing procedure possible.

Why I Need Help Now

Recently, I graduated with a diploma in photography and made the brave (and risky) decision to leave a full-time job of five years that had supported me throughout college. Embracing my passion for photography means pursuing a creative dream and aligning with my true self, but it also means stepping away from a steady income. Rising costs due to inflation have forced me to sacrifice even essential needs like groceries, and I’m juggling affording HRT, expensive medications for my mental health, and ADHD without insurance coverage.

Thankfully, I do have OHIP insurance, which covers a large portion of my surgery. That makes it even more heartbreaking to be so close to my goal yet still fall short. I had planned to pick up as much work as possible in the coming weeks to bridge the gap, but a series of setbacks—a car accident followed by an injury that affected my vision and a subsequent concussion evaluation—has upended those plans. These challenges have not only impacted my health and ability to work, but have also left me feeling devastated and uncertain about reaching my goal in time.
