The story so far…
My name is Katrina Murray and I own and run the popular Facebook page Proud Kiwis Abroad www.Facebook.com/KiwiAndProud (founded in January 2011) and website of the same name that came later in 2012! www.ProudKiwisAbroad.com
I live in Queensland with my husband and am the proud mum of 5 great kids! My eldest 3 were born in New Zealand and the youngest 2 born here in Australia!!
Here are a few pics to introduce you to my clan! I’m a very family oriented mummy and they’re a huge part of what drives me to be who I am. They’re also why I want to make sure our New Zealand history isn’t forgotten even though we live away from home!
Through Proud Kiwis Abroad I’ve been having a great time keeping Kiwi expats up to date and in touch with each other and New Zealand with fun posts, news, entertainment, photos and all kinds of things for over 3 years now.
Some time ago I realised that a big part of what made me feel less homesick was being able to make my favourite recipes from home. Being able to make Lolly Cake or some Afghans for my family was comforting and allowed me to share stories with my children. Like the time that mum spent teaching us how to make Lolly Cake and we’d always eat the last of the condensed milk out of the can, or scraping the bowls when we made Chocolate Cake or Pavlova, or licking the beaters clean afterwards! My mum has since passed and it helps me to keep her memory alive with my family.
About 2 years ago I had the idea to combine some favourite family recipes with photos and amazing things to see, do and experience in New Zealand into books – and I’ve been working on them ever since!! I wanted to create something so that fellow Kiwis, (or lovers of New Zealand!!) would have something that was a talking point along with recipes, to help them keep their memories of New Zealand alive too!
I launched the first one as ebook in January 2014,

and the other 3 ebooks in the series

were out by Easter 2014!
I did it this way to test and see if people would like it and to see if it was something that people wanted, before we took the next step and went to a print version.
People have been loving it and it has been selling well since our January launch.
The only problem has been people keep asking me ‘Are you doing hard copies?’ ‘When will the hard copies be ready’ ‘I’d prefer a hard copy to an ebook, when will you do it in print so I can buy one?’
And I’ve been working on it!! I’ve tidied up the ebook with the important legal stuff, got the formatting done. I’ve been researching printers and getting quotes on printing, packaging, shipping and promoting. It’s taken me ages but I know all of the costs involved AND I’ve now finally found a local printer who can do a great price for me. I even have the venue for the book launch organised, thank you Kiwi Shop Gold Coast!!
I’m ready to take the leap and get copies printed!! YAY!!
The ONLY thing that’s stopping me now are the funds to make it happen. I know of self publishing authors who’ve invested between $20-30,000+ to bring their books to life.
And now I hope that this is where you come into the story!
I decided to do a Go Fund Me campaign so that I could share the steps of the journey with you more readily and raise the funds in an organised way that also enabled me to give rewards to each person that helped me achieve my goal. It’s also exciting for me to be able to include you in the process of bringing the print copies to life! After all, those of you who’ve been around Proud Kiwis Abroad for a while are a HUGE part of the reason we continue to reach more Kiwis and help them feel connected to New Zealand by being part of our worldwide community!!
So, here is an idea of what the first 4 books will look like in print!

In each book you get
- 20 favourite recipes from home,
- gorgeous photos of New Zealand,
- 25 amazing things to see, do and experience in New Zealand,
- and recipe illustrations.
I’ve also been feverishly working on a special Christmas Edition!
In the Christmas Edition are:
- 50 amazing things to see, do and experience in New Zealand.
- 40 recipes including things for the kids to make and gift ideas,
- Gorgeous photos of New Zealand
- Recipe illustrations
The Christmas Edition will be released as an ebook AND as a print book.
I’ve done the bulk of the work already and have worked out that I need $10,000 to print, post and promote all my books and rewards.
Part of my research has been to make sure that what I do is affordable so people get value. I've also gotten various quotes so we can do a variety of print runs. I can do either smaller or larger print runs to make sure that you get what you are paying for!
Once I’ve achieved the first $4000 the printing process can begin in earnest. What this means for you is that I’m not ordering more copies than I can ensure I can deliver on. It’s to safekeep the trust that you’re investing in me when you order in advance. I value and appreciate that more than my words can convey!
How the plan will unfold.
- 5th October to – 5th November - Go Fund Me campaign runs.
- As soon as we reach $4000 – Craig gets the go ahead to start printing the first 4 books. The stickers will also be printed at this time. I already have all the postcards ready to go.
- (29th Oct - 3 Nov I’m attending a much anticipated wedding in New Zealand so will be a bit quiet on Facebook - Just letting you know in advance so you don't think I've run away with the money LOL!!!)
- 5th November – I collect the first run of books from the printers and start posting the books and the other rewards.
- 29th November the official Book Launch at The Kiwi Shop, Parkwood on the Gold Coast.
- 15th-30th November. All books and rewards will be sent by this time!
The pic below is Craig! He’s from Christchurch! He’s going to print the books for me! As a Kiwi himself he’s excited to bring this project to life and has helped a lot to get it print ready!
