LOGLINE:

LOLA, a 16-year-old star soccer player, must stay with her estranged father in order to visit prospective colleges or risk her chance of pursuing a college education.

SYNOPSIS

The Kick-Off stars LOLA, a 16 year old star soccer player eager to sign onto a college team. She and her single-mother JADA reside in Northern California and have always struggled to make ends meet. Lola has not spoken to her father OLIVER since he left when she was only eight years old and moved to San Diego. Her dreams start to seem like reality when she gets invited by three schools in San Diego to visit their campus’ and meet their teams. As she arrives in town, her mom breaks the news to her that her aunt canceled last minute, leaving her with no where to stay. Turns out Lola either has to stay with her father or miss out on college opportunities. Lola begrudgingly agrees to stay with him since it really is her only option.

Over the course of a few days, Lola is hit with a huge mix of emotions as she navigates through college tours while seeing her father again. She can’t seem to get away from him because every coach she meets asks about her father and talks about his amazing soccer legacy. The night before the last tour, Lola can’t stand the pressure anymore and attempts to switch her flight and leave as soon as possible. After talking with Jada, it becomes clear that she can’t refund her flight or change it. She has to keep going on and visit the last school, which also happens to be the school Oliver played for. While there, she comes across a case of trophies from when her father played there and for the first time feels a unusual sense of pride and belonging.

As they are saying their slightly awkward goodbyes, Oliver gives Lola his championship ball as  a good luck charm. Just a few days before, this gesture would have enraged Lola, but now it thaws her heart a little. As she starts walking away, Lola can’t help but turn back and ask to tell her a few reasons why he left the majors. This means the world to Oliver. A tiny step towards forgiveness.

CREW:

Director - Abby

As an artist, Abby finds herself the most content while creating -- whether that be working on a film set, writing music in her room, or editing on a desktop. It’s the journey of the creative process that brings her the most joy and fulfillment. She is hard at work, pushing herself consistently throughout college. Abby wrote, directed, and starred in her junior film, Meddling with Destiny, and is eager to work on another of her own projects. Abby worked her freshman year as an intern, then worked her way up to her current position as Lead Producer and Videographer at ASI Communications Video Productions. Summer 2018 Abby interned at Funny or Die and was able to learn more about herself and her future career goals as a director and producer. Abby knows she is prepared for whatever her future career holds, whether than be on a set, behind or in front of the camera, or in the recording studio.

Producer - Monica

Monica is a third year film student who has a love for storytelling. Her favorite challenge is helping transform a story from written script into visual reality. Producing film projects gives her the ability to create, collaborate, and grow alongside other talented and passionate filmmakers. She hopes to encourage young female filmmakers to be ambitious and aspire towards success in the film industry.

Director of Photography - Jacob

Hello, I'm Jacob and I'm hoping to be the one who will visually tell Lola's story. I'm currently a Senior in the Cinematography track, and my ultimate dream goal is to be an engineer who designs camera sensors. My hope is to be able to apply visual techniques learned throughout my years at CSULB and apply that to a sensor for all artists to enjoy and customize. I am originally from Modesto, CA and I come from a single parent household, which is one reason why I like Lola's story. I can't wait to start work on this incredible story and to be able to work with an amazing crew.

Production Designer - Jasmine

Jasmine Monzon is finishing her last semester at CSULB with a Film & Screenwriting major. She developed a passion for design, and has been self-teaching art on film. She is excited to take part in The Kick-Off as production designer and take all that she has learned over the years into practice for her last project as a student.
