Updated 8/24/2019

This GoFundMe initially started as fundraising for a bookstore. As the fundraiser has developed, so has the vision.

Chicken Wagon Books has developed from the concept of a for-profit bookstore to a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the number of books owned by families living in low-income communities in San Bernardino county.

The specific goal of this GoFundMe is to gain funding for purchasing the vehicle and paying for the nonprofit registration. The vehicle is going to be used as a book-distribution medium during public events.

The breakdown of the costs is as follows:

Vehicle Cost: $1,000.00
Street-Legal Kit: $165
DMV Registration: $100
Filing Articles of Incorporation with State of California: $30
Chicken Wagon Books logo art: $70
Chicken Wagon Wi-Fi HotSpot: $150

My work in a low-income community elementary school library has me interact with a lot of kids who own no more than three or four books. A high percentage of our school population--which is one of nineteen elementary schools serving only the city of Rialto--is disadvantaged. More often than not, books are thought to be a luxury or unimportant when compared to other necessities such as toiletries, clothing, food and shelter. As an organization, Chicken Wagon Books also aims to encourage and educate families on the importance of reading, especially in the earlier years when child development is at its most crucial phase.

Literacy organizations such as First Books and Reading Is Fundamental are indispensable for schools and other nonprofits to assist communities with raising literacy and success levels. Chicken Wagon Books is going to act as a direct conveyer of books to these families. Our volunteers will drive the Chicken Wagon directly to neighborhoods we have partnered with and will give out books directly to families on certain designated days. We are also partnering with local businesses and organizations to host and sponsor free literacy events for families.

Our books will come from a mix of donations by publishers and bookstores, as well as funding we receive from community partners and individual donors.

Your support is much needed and greatly appreciated--if you have other ideas for contributions and donations, please send us a message so we can work with you!
