Nathan is A Battler
But the family needs help.
The need is immediate and great!
Alyssa Fobes, is the mother of 11-year old Nathan Fobes. Nathan is pictured above (left) with his older brother, Christian.
As many of you know, Nathan was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia on Halloween. Essentially, this means his bone marrow is not working as it should. The recommended treatment for this is immunosuppression for 3-6 months with the hope it will re-start their marrow and return things to normal.
Recently, Nathan became very ill with an infection that traveled into his blood stream as well as having pneumonia, to the point he has been in ICU for the past 4 days. When Alyssa heard the Dr. feared death for her child because of how ill he was it was a terrible, terrible feeling. This came on in a matter of 24 hours. In 24 hours, he went from walking around fine, to almost dying. That's how quickly an illness can hit Nathan while his immune system is basically non-existent.
As you can imagine, Alyssa and the Doctors are worried about this happening again. As such, Nathan's doctor has recommended a Bone Marrow transplant as his best option for survival. Alyssa and The Family will meet with the transplant team at Children's Mercy next week for HLA typing so that a potential match can be found. Unfortunately Christian, Nathan's brother, will more than likely not be a match. It is hoped there will already be a match in the bone marrow registry. It will be a challenge to find a match, especially someone who is African American, because donors are primarily Caucasian. This limits Nathan's options depending on how much of Alyssa's genes he received. If you are interested in learning more about the bone marrow registry there are two resources listed below.

Nathan’s present condition is very serious. He is presently at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. His Doctors recommend a move to Children’s Mercy Hospital based in Kansas City, MO, which specializes in the health of children and families. Children’s Mercy Hospital is an award winning hospital where Nathan will receive the best care. Alyssa's family lives in Topeka, so she will have high travel expenses as Children’s Mercy Hospital is about 90 minutes away. In addition, medical expenses not covered by insurance could run high.
Please help!
The family appreciates everyone’s offers of assistance, as well as thoughts and prayers. Alyssa says "this has been one of the worst weeks/months of my life, but I am feeling incredibly blessed that Nathan is pulling through and that we did not lose him."
Please keep Nathan and His Family In Your Thoughts and Prayers.
