Robots whirred awake as teams prepared for the games, and eager and anxious faces stared into the blue lights of the next 7 hours of their day. Judges set the tables, while teams huddled up whispering the few brave words they could muster. . . and then there was us, five girls wearing the brightest shade of aqua you have ever seen. . .they said we lit up the entire room.
Hi, we are Team 61078, the Arrr-tists, a FIRST Lego League (FLL) community team of five 6th grade girls. We started our team last year in 5th grade in our best friend's basement, and we sure have come a long way! Last year we won 2nd in the FLL Rhode Island State Championship and that sent us to the WAFFLE, an International Lego League competition in Worcester, Massachusetts. This year, we are much more experienced, and we took 1st Place at the FLL Rhode Island State Championship. We are now headed to Houston, Texas in April for the FIRST World Championship.
At the RI State Championship, we demonstrated excellence in the 4 areas of evaluation:
- Robot Game Performance: After devising strategies, performing trade studies, developing code, and iterating our game execution dozens of times, our robot, "Girls Rule!", secured 1st place.
- Innovation Project: After researching this year’s theme of Ocean Research and consulting with many professionals in the field, we developed an idea for removing microplastics from rivers.
- Core Values: We demonstrated high levels of sportsmanship, teamwork, discovery, and impactful work. We shared our interest and enthusiasm for STEM by holding demonstrations for our sponsors, at community STEM events, and our former elementary school.
- Robot Design: We demonstrated, documented, and communicated a disciplined engineering approach to robot development during judging interviews and our extensive engineering notebooks.
