The Yopra Cup - Ella's Journey

Donation protected
The Yopra Cup Fundraiser for Ella Donlon

On December 26th every year, a charity football  match dubbed 'The Yopra Cup' takes place to raise some much-needed funds for charities in the local Mullingar area.

In years gone by, monies raised have been donated to: The Irish Cancer Society; St. Vincent de Paul; and Meals on Wheels. In 2019, the charity chosen was the North Westmeath Hospice and a total of €20,000 was donated – an incredible achievement by all involved!

This year, the two teams involved will donate all money raised to a little girl named Ella Donlon. From Co. Roscommon, 15-year-old Ella needs our help to urgently access vital health services that are unfortunately not available here in Ireland.

However, a leading consultant in the UK has agreed to properly assess and treat her severe Gastrointestinal issues which have taken away the last year of her life.

Put simply, Ella can’t eat or drink anything orally and can’t tolerate enough through traditional tube-feeding methods to give her the nutrition she needs. Ella is now reliant on IV fluids which means she can’t go home and has been in Crumlin Children’s Hospital for many months.

The consultant in the UK is very experienced and has a network of other experts to provide additional assistance in her treatment.

He is very excited about what he can do for Ella, using latest diagnostics, pioneering studies and treatment options that have proven successful elsewhere, and is confident he can get Ella on the road to recovery and using her digestive system again.

Ella is scheduled to travel to the UK in the coming weeks and the money raised by this fundraiser will be used to get her to the UK, and to cover transport, medical and accommodation costs associated with assessments and treatment there.

What is The Yopra Cup all about?

In the lead up to Christmas 2017, a group of Mullingar men - in their mid-late 20s at the time - organised a social, 9-aside football match to be played on St. Stephen's Day. All players gave a sum of money on the day which, in turn, was donated to St Vincent de Paul, Mullingar.

After such a successful and positive day in 2017, it was decided that this game would be organised on an annual basis, with any all monies raised going to a different charity every year.

This year, 'The Yopra Cup' will see 'The Dogs' go for 4 in-a-row against 'Scorpy Boys FC'.

As players, we will be pushing hard to raise as much sponsorship as possible in anticipation for the match on December 26th.  The match will be contested in Mullingar Shamrocks, on Stephen's Day, at 10:30am.

Coffee and refreshments will be provided by Hatch 23 (with all profits also being donated to Ella) at the match for those wishing to come down and watch the entertaining fixture.

We would greatly appreciate any contribution you could make to this most-worthy cause!

Thank you,

The Dogs and Scorpy FC

All funds received will be donated to Ella and an official presentation of the final donation figure will be shared with all donors in the new year.
