I am raising money for the WWF, to help protect the amazing landscapes I cycle through.
When I visited South East Asia, I was shocked by how much of the natural landscape had been deforested for farmland, such as rubber and palm oil plantations.
Vietnam, a country once famous for its jungles, now has almost none left. When I visited the North I was told that all the forest I was seeing was replanted, after the government had cut down the jungles in the 20th century. I was fortunate enough to see some of the remaining jungle and the contrast was huge compared to the replanted forest.
Again in Thailand and Cambodia, which were once covered almost entirely by rainforest, I saw mostly farmland and barren landscapes. I visited a village in Roi Et, where they told me the landscape was once entirely rainforest when the village was founded in the 1980s. I was shocked as the 1980s were not so long ago and the nearest rainforest was
hundreds of kilometers remaining.
I think its important to protect the remaining natural landscapes and wildlife within. Not just for the countries I visit, but the whole world, such as South America or Indonesia. I was my children and grandchildren to be able to visit the same landscapes I was lucky enough to see.
