The Wreck and 2020

Like for most people, 2020 has been a difficult year. I was laid off back in March from my waitressing gig and am still waiting for my unemployment benefits. After depleting my savings, the only thing I could do was take a secondary job at the local grocery store. I started less than 2 weeks ago and everything was going fantastic, I was offered a promotion as a department manager and everything started looking up.
My second day in my new position I was headed home from work. I was about half a mile from home. As I sat, waiting for traffic to pass so I could turn left on my road, I looked in my rearview mirror just in time to see headlights and then bam.
I woke up with my car in a tree. I opened the door as people came running to my vehicle and immediately fell to the ground, bloody and broken.
I was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
My injuries are many, the most pressing, I fractured a vertebrae in my back and was told I need to see a spine surgeon tomorrow.
Thinking this would be a simple thing, upon release from the hospital we started calling surgeons. No one will even set up an appointment because I do not have medical insurance at this time. I'm covered under the vehicle insurance medical, but that doesn't seem to matter.
I was told I'd need up front cash as a self payer. I'd laugh if I wasn't so sore. I've applied for medical assistance, but was told they're 60+ days out on processing applications because of the covid stuff and so many layoffs.
Our medical system is as broken as my face...which I was also told I'd need to see a maxillofacial surgeon as well, but that's not going to happen either.
I'm worried about the back injury, the er released me with 4 pain pills and a script for 10 more.
I haven't even received my first paycheck from my pandemic job, still waiting on unemployment. It's just an awful situation the whole way around.
I know eventually her auto insurance will pay for my medical bills, but it could be awhile.
I go to see a primary care physician today to see about my soft tissue injuries to my neck, luckily he's a sliding scale provider who will see me for $100 and bill me for testing and whatever else needs done.
I just don't know what else to do. I'm amazed at the lack of care a patient receives in this country. I was told the hospital has a spinal surgeon on call, but no one called him. They just push you out the front door and send you into the unknown.
There is good news though, I'm alive and I walked today. That counts as a win.
Thank you, to all of you for showing me continued love and support. Let's hope 2021 will be better.
