The World Needs BIG LOVE!

Mosaic On A Stick is a community-based mosaic art studio and supply shop that, like many small POC-owned businesses, has taken a huge financial hit during the coronavirus pandemic. The owner and lead artist, Lori Greene, is a Black and Native artist whose passion is to create change through art. Ever since she opened the studio 16 years ago, Lori has worked tirelessly  to keep her prices affordable and accessible to the public, while simultaneously creating public artwork centered around community, healing, and social justice.

Her public art pieces draw from her experiences and cultural heritage of being African-American and Indigenous to the Mississippi band of Choctaw. Through her work she provides opportunities for art-making for people who may not be able to afford art classes due to classism, racism, and other systematic barriers.

She believes that making art has the power to heal. She has created works of art with people of all identities and backgrounds. She has created mosaic murals with young boys in juvenile probation, with elderly folks with dementia, with elementary and high school kids, and with adults with disabilities. She has created murals and sculptures on buildings and in parks in neighborhoods all over the Twin Cities. She is currently working on a large mosaic that will be a memorial to survivors of sexual assault.

Due to the oppressive barriers of systemic racism, banks have refused to give Lori loans to support her business - long before the arrival of the coronavirus. The only bank loan she's ever gotten was because her white business partner at the time met with the bankers. Lori has made many sacrifices to support her studio financially, all on top of working to provide for her 3 children. With many public art commissions, classes and workshops coming to a sudden halt due to coronavirus, the income Lori depends on has been reduced to a trickle. Since the pandemic hit, Lori has applied for and received a small federal SBA loan, but this loan only covers the cost of paying her staff; she is still struggling to cover the costs of studio bills and basic needs for her family.

This is why we are now turning to you, the community, to support Lori and Mosaic On A Stick.

The estimated amount needed to cover studio and basic living costs is $10,000 for one month. We want Lori and her important work to survive and thrive much longer than that! Given the uncertainty of this pandemic and ongoing racial discrimination, our goal is to raise enough to sustain Lori and her business for at least 12 months.

Thank you so much for your support. If you would like to be a sustaining supporter of this important pillar in our community, please check out the studio’s Patreon page where you can make a monthly contribution.
