In August 2013, I was involved in an automobile accident which caused a spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis. While in rehabilitation at Shepherd center in Atlanta, I was fitted for a manual wheelchair. I was hopeful the wheelchair would be efficient and allow my life to be comfortable, providing a reliable base for recovery. Unfortunately, even though I have made tons of progress over the last three years, I feel the wheelchair is holding me back from further recovery. As my body has changed over the years, I no longer fit in the chair, and the chair has parts that are wearing out. This has caused muscle issues and scoliosis, resulting in more pain now than when I first finished rehab. I've had to take a leave of absence from my job and give up wheelchair rugby. I have been fitted for a new chair that I hope will help me reverse some of the damage and become an active member of society again.
