Aloha Friends, Family, and Kind-Hearted Strangers,
I hope this message finds you in good health and spirit. My heart goes out to each and every one of you who have been affected directly or indirectly by the recent devastating wildfires in Lahaina, Maui. We, as a community, have faced one of the most challenging episodes in our history, and the damage to our beloved town is heart-wrenching.
One of the most pressing concerns arising from this tragedy is the destruction of our primary schools. The vast majority of west side children from kindergarten to 5th grade have lost their places of learning. These are young souls with dreams, hopes, and immense potential that now stand at the brink of disruption in their foundational education years.
Why this Fundraiser?
While our community rises like a phoenix, rebuilding our homes and lives, we need to ensure our children have a structured educational setting. Parents are grappling with the immense challenge of balancing rebuilding our lives and ensuring our children continue their education. We cannot let their dreams be another casualty of this tragedy.
Our community is more than just a geographical location—it's a tapestry of shared memories, experiences, and hopes for the future. Keeping our families and community intact is paramount. One way to do that is by ensuring that our children can continue their education here, on the west side of Maui. Sending them to other parts of the island, or even to the mainland, not only disrupts their education but also tears at the fabric of our community. It's vital that during these challenging times, we hold onto our sense of community by keeping our children close and ensuring they receive a local and hands-on education.
Our Immediate Goal:
1. Emergency Educational Setting: We are aiming to create an alternative educational setting that can act as a bridge until we find a more permanent solution. The goal is to provide a space where children can learn, play, and be safe.
2. Afterschool Programs: Even if our children are engaged in some form of learning, they will need structured afterschool programs. This will not only keep them engaged but will also provide some respite to parents who are busy rebuilding.
3. Exploring Partnerships with Educational Programs: We will be seeking collaborations with both mainstream and special education programs. Our intention is to potentially expand their capacities, or find space for their services closer to home, ensuring as many children as possible are supported during this crucial period.
How can you help?
1. Donate: Any amount, big or small, will go a long way in ensuring our children have a safe and structured learning environment.
2. Share: Even if you cannot donate, spreading the word about this cause will increase its reach. Share this campaign on your social media, with your friends, family, and acquaintances.
3. Volunteer: If you're in the area and can offer time, skills, or resources, your contribution will be invaluable.
In Closing,
The road to recovery will be long and arduous, but as a community, our spirit remains unbroken. With your support, we can ensure our children's futures remain bright and undiminished.
Mahalo for your kindness and aloha.
With deep gratitude,
From our extended West Maui 'ohana to yours.
P.S. With each donation, we expand our 'ohana of support. Every child we assist today paves the way for a brighter and stronger Lahaina tomorrow. Together, let's invest in our most precious treasure — our children.
