The West Dean Dream
Donativo protegido
My Journey:
I began woodworking at an early age with my Dad, and have carried this on until today. I then combined my love of playing guitar and woodwork and undertook a degree in ‘Musical Instruments’, where I studied to build and repair acoustic guitars. As part of my degree I studied the repair and restoration of musical instruments. Over the years I have pursued my craft, restored and built many instruments, whilst also making furniture. After many years I have decided to increase my knowledge and skill base and return to formal education. This is not a decision I have taken lightly.
As a craftsman, I have always strived to improve and grow. Having always wanted to learn new techniques and apply them, this pursuit has led me to want to move into the field of conservation. I have applied and been accepted onto the post graduate diploma in ‘Conservation of Furniture and Wood Related Objects’ course at West Dean College. I will be studying for a post graduate diploma, which will hopefully lead to the Masters in the same field of study. This is something that I am incredibly excited about; now I just need help to make it happen.
The West Dean Dream:
Why West Dean? In short, West Dean is the foremost place to study the course I wish to do. Not only that, it is the only place that I can specialise in furniture and wood related objects, meaning the skills I will learn will not only be applicable to furniture, but to musical instruments as well. These are therefore skills that are essential to work within a conservation environment.
Asking for Support:
I am asking for support towards my tuition fees. Unfortunately, due to the level of qualification and my original degree, I am ineligible for government student support. I have been given a grant towards the tuition fees of £5,000, however the course fees are £15,000.
I have a small amount of savings that will help cover living expenses as I will only be able to work part time, meaning I am £10,000 short for my fees. Any help towards making this dream a reality would be so greatly appreciated.
