The Varsen Daughter’s Education Fund
Donation protected
My name is Sydney Varsen and I am a recent graduate of the University of South Florida with a Bachelor’s in biological health sciences. I am also the older sister of Lauren Varsen, who has a dream of working as an electrical engineer with the United States Navy. She is currently in her third year of five at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and still has two more years of schooling left to go until she reaches her bachelor’s degree.
I began this fundraiser to give support to my sister to finish her remaining education in college.
Only a few weeks after celebrating a heart-warming Mother’s Day as a family, we lost our beloved role model.
On Wednesday May 20th, 2020, my family and I unexpectedly lost our mother, Teresa. After a day of fun in the sun on beach, everyone retired to bed—except for our mom. With her Kindle in hand, she almost made it to bed before she experienced a heart attack. She was only 53 years old and was leaving behind two daughters and a loving husband, all too soon.
Background
Growing up in Pueblo, Colorado, my mother’s life was beautiful, and she had the brightest of minds. She was a dedicated, caring, and hard-working mother who wanted to see her daughters succeed in life. In her free time, she would walk along the beach with our energetic dog, Brody, in search of the perfect conch shell and read science fiction novels. I loved these moments with my mother. Seeing her so serene and relaxed made my heart swell. Because outside of these golden times, her brow would be furrowed and buried into some form of work. Whether it be making sure my sister and I stay on a smart path, an issue with her programing, or a bill needing to be paid. She managed to do it all and do it fueled on so much love that I did not know someone could give so much. Ultimately, we were not the only people who appreciated her. She was valued by so many because of the way she touched their hearts—touched their lives. Teresa Varsen always went the extra mile to support her fellow colleagues and ensure all family and friends had a comfy bed to sleep and a plate full of delicious food to eat. No challenge was too scary, and no obstacle was too tall. Never left unsurprised, Teresa was consistently proving her dedication through genuine kindness and love.
Our Mother
My mother, Teresa Varsen, was an exceptional woman who proactively sustained our family. As a computer engineer and analyst, she supported our family over the years and overcame any obstacle that stood in her way. Fortunately, her career allowed for her children to receive the college dream of furthering their education. However, her passing leaves us mourning for her life, a numb desire to hear to voice murmur, “I love you,” once more. Being the main economic support for our family, losing our mother meant losing not only a piece of our hearts—our souls—but also a piece of our financial support.
Lauren Varsen, The Future Graduate
At the early ages of 10, Lauren was deeply fascinated with aspects of physics, puzzles, and engineering. From creative building sets such as K’Nex to 1500-piece jigsaw puzzles, Lauren is naturally gifted with an interest and genuine talent in engineering. With our mother’s guidance, Lauren worked exceptionally hard to get into the private research school, Drexel University. An academically comprehensive and globally engaging curriculum is the perfect setting to curate and advance her mathematic and scientific skillset. Under their co-op program, Lauren was accepted to work with the United States Navy by researching and evaluating special electrical engineering projects. Given her outstanding performance, she was proposed a job opportunity after she graduates with her bachelor’s degree in the next few years. This opportunity, however, requires her to obtain her degree and she needs financial support to finish her education to accept this job to serve her country.
Overcoming the Financial Challenge
We hope to overcome this challenge by applying for new student loans and through working part-time. Even though I am in the midst of finding a career job for my field, I plan to dedicate any necessary funds to make sure my sister receive the college education she deserves—the opportunity that our mother believed she deserves. The mourning is fresh in our minds and the grief is heavy in our hearts over the loss of our irreplaceable mother. And yet, we truck on and continue to walk through new doorways with a smile because we know that Teresa would have wanted us to keep moving. Our mother was never, ever, a quitter. She uses her natural puzzle-solving skills to resolve any issue and she would have wanted us to never waiver on still believing in our dreams.
Financial Spending
The funds received will be first and foremost, spent towards ensuring Lauren pays her Drexel tuition. Any remaining funds will be split between her and I solely to begin paying off previous loans and their accumulated interest rates. Only my sister and I will have access to these funds because we believe our college education comes first. Her death was so unexpected and occurred too soon. Leaving behind no will and no life insurance, our mother left her daughters with truly little funds to survive off of, thus, my sister and I have each other to rely on in these trying times. Even though our mother’s income was steady, her savings account was not as reassuring because she was still paying off previous and current bills. Still recovering from years of multiple knee surgeries, our father plans to return to work to further support our academic journey. Her loss transformed almost every part of our lives.
It was at that point, of losing our mother, the primary source of household income, that we realized that we needed help from our community. Not only have we lost our mother, but Lauren may have lost her dream of her future. However, with your help, we may be able to financially support her to the finish line where she walks across the stage, diploma in hand.
What YOU Can Do to Help
I hope you will consider helping us in easing the financial burden facing our family and grant the funding needed to pay off Lauren’s tuition for the upcoming year. My mother worked so hard to make sure her two little girls grew up to be strong women with college degrees. She dedicated so much time and money to invest in our futures that the thought of letting her down is unbearable. Lauren and I hope that one day, we grow up to be the successful and dignified woman our mother was. Without our Mother Teresa around, now is your chance to make a difference for those in need—for the opportunity to turn someone’s dream into a reality.
Given her recent death, in lieu of flowers, please give the gift of academic opportunity by contributing to our education fund. Any amount donated is a step closer to making our mother proud for graduating from college.
