The Vander-Heyden Family

Hi Everyone,

I want to start by saying thank you to Scott Vander-Heyden. Thank you for accepting me and my son into your family with open arms, for blessing the world with some of the finest people I will ever meet, and most importantly, for his dedication to living a fulfilling and proactive life as a husband, father, and grandfather. It was intimidating and a great gift to witness how well put together you were.

For those that do not know Scott as well as we had the pleasure of knowing him, he was a very competitive, Boston Sports fanatic, rattling off recent sports news and standings all the time. He always had to have two living rooms, and depending on how well the Bruins were doing, you might find him frantically switching to the other room after the bruins get scored on. He booked time in his day every day for family, whether it was a conversation, a board game, a joke, or a hard discussion about life, he was always there and always consistent.

Scott had an endless supply of humor and was simply masterful at listening and helping people. It was a real gift. He knew exactly how to use compassion and humor to make you comfortable so that he could help you and every conversation would always lead to something positive and productive. He asked questions because he cared and he listened intently when you spoke to him, even if he was multi-tasking with Texas Hold-Em or Words with Friends on his phone which he loved to annoy his daughters by doing.

He was a pillar of his home, pillar of the community, and a pillar of his workplace and achieving that takes consistency every day. Always showing up and always doing the right thing, no matter what.

Before his sudden passing, he had made a brave decision to move from home and pursue North Carolina to start a new chapter in his life, one he was so nervously excited for. All he talked about was being able to build a house and have room to host all of his family.

Now that Scott has passed, we are working as a family to have April and the girls back home to New Hampshire so that everyone can be together, which is crucial at this time. While the move to NC provided an opportunity for his friends and family to say a proper goodbye, it also creates some near-term challenges, including managing a relocation in the next several weeks during what is already a difficult period. All proceeds will go to April and her pursuit of happiness after this tragedy, for relocating the rest of her family, belongings, assets, etc., to New Hampshire, and supporting funeral/memorial/celebration of life services.

As for the gigantic hole that Scott will be leaving in the community and to his friends and family, I am so sorry his time with us was so limited and it is only a testament to his impact. On behalf of his family, we are already feeling his strength and direction and I know he is proud of his girls.
