And I will praise you again and again. "For I restore health to you and heal you of your wounds," says the Lord. Jeremiah 30:17
I don't know where to start but here goes .....
At the beginning of the year, Danny's doctors had found Danny's aorta had not remolded the way the surgeons had hoped from previous surgeries. As a result, the surgeon said he needed surgery sooner rather than later. So on March 28th, Danny went to Sentara Norfolk for a Hybrid EVAR. Two surgeries during the same hospitalization. One to reroute blood flow (instead of coming from the aorta) & then stent the remainder of his aorta to give him the “full metal jacket of aortic stents.”
Here is where we are now:
Danny's oldest son DJ, graduated Friday! Danny loves his boys & family fiercely & it broke his big heart to not be there for DJ. Even so, we remain incredibly grateful that Danny was able to watch on YouTube & for God’s grace in Danny’s battle to get healthy & back to his boys!
The Drs are saying Danny is medically ready for discharge. He is slowly regaining energy, and we hope that he will be able to come home this week. When Danny comes home, he will still have his drains so that they can continue to drain the infected fluid collections. They have removed his feeding tube, but he is having a hard time eating bc he feels full after a small amount of food.
Danny has been in the hospital for 68 of the last 70 days & has had four surgeries, two of them being open abdomen surgeries, during this time. The 3/28 open surgery was supposed to be two weeks in the hospital. What has followed was NOT in the plan. He has lost 60 lbs, many days of no nutrition(prev hospital), is anemic, has infected fluid collections, multiple blood transfusions, has two drains, a feeding tube & an open surgical wound. Danny is a hard-working, hands-on Dad with three kids. He hasn’t had an actual shower except for 2-back in April. I work at night, so Danny used to take care of the boys himself at least three nights a week. He coaches their football teams. Usually, during this time of the year, Danny is outside with them (& our whole block’s kids) or swimming in our pool EVERY DAY & working 50 hours a week. This is a drastic, jarring change to his life because he chose to have a AAA repair that he thought would help him live longer!
Unfortunately, VCU hasn’t been able to secure a home health agency willing to accept him with what he’s coming home with. Danny will be on IV antibiotics for at least the rest of the month. He will have a wound VAC over his surgery wound. The care coordinator is contacting the wound clinics closer to home, and we have managed to get an appointment in Port Warwick. She thinks an IV nurse following his case will be able to handle the nursing parts of the IV antibiotic care. If he can’t go to the clinic, we’ll have to change wound dressings at home. I’m praying he gets great follow-up care to have the best chance of healing!!
Danny has been pretty quiet lately. I think he is just trying to get through all of this mentally. It is a lot to process, and he misses his family.
Danny and Tiffany have been out of work since March 28th. You can imagine what a financial burden this is for their family. We appreciate any help that you can give to this family. Continue praying for Danny's health. Danny's boys need their dad home.
