Intro
In September 1944, during the Battle of Arnhem, thirteen Allied soldiers were killed and hastily laid to rest in a temporary field grave along Van Tienhovenlaan, Oosterbeek. Their remains were later re-interred with honour at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery — but the place where they first fell and were buried remains unmarked.
We are determined to change that.
The Project
We propose to install a permanent stone memorial marker, in the same style as others in the region, bearing a bronze plaque with bilingual inscription and the Pegasus emblem of the Airborne Division.
This marker will:
- Honour the 9 named and 4 unknown men initially buried on the site.
- Ensure the location is never forgotten.
- Join other battlefield markers that preserve Arnhem’s story for future generations.
Our Journey
To honour these men, we recently undertook a pilgrimage following the route of one of the soldiers buried in the Van Tienhovenlaan grave, and others in his battalion. His name was Robert Alfred Tappin.
We walked where they fought, visited key sites, and stood on the ground of their first burial place.
This journey has been documented in a YouTube documentary, which tells both the men’s story and our personal experience retracing their steps.
How the Funds Will Be Used
The total project cost is estimated at £8,000–£12,000, covering:
- Stone pillar & bronze plaque fabrication
- Municipal permissions and site works
- Installation and anti-theft fixings
- Unveiling ceremony
Any surplus will go towards maintenance and associated commemorative activity and a landing page detailing the men commemorated.
Why It Matters
The men of Arnhem gave everything in the fight for freedom. Though their final resting place is marked with honour, the site of their first sacrifice is fading from memory. This marker will ensure that future generations know — and remember.
How You Can Help
Donate whatever you can — every contribution brings the memorial closer.
Share this campaign and the YouTube documentary when released.
Support the commemorative march.
Attend the unveiling ceremony.
Raising Awareness
We will soon launch a YouTube Documentary, which tells both the men’s story and our personal experience retracing their steps.
To raise awareness and funds, we will hold a commemorative route march, in authentic uniform of the men of 1st Airborne Division. The route will link up the pertinent UK bases of the 156th Battalion.
All updates will be posted on this page so please feel free to revisit this site for news and updates and share this with your friends and family.
They gave their lives for our freedom. Let us give them remembrance that endures.
- Proposed Wording (bilingual). Please note: this is ‘ not set in stone’ and is subject to change.
Following fierce fighting in the wood surrounding this marker
Thirteen soldiers of the 4th Parachute Brigade were first laid to rest in a field grave here, on or about 20 September 1944.
They now rest at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
