Welcome to the Tangent Bus!
In our mission to support and improve equity in access to enriching learning opportunities for all, this fully-equipped mobile classroom and workshop (built in a converted 40 ft school bus) travels to local schools and parks to provide unique and engaging educational programs where they otherwise might not exist.
The Tangent Bus is the home of The Tangent Initiative, a community-driven, alternative, experiential education program based in West Seattle. We specialize in providing a safe and engaging environment for kids who don't quite fit the standard mold, who need just a little more of the right kind of encouragement for their creative brilliance to shine. Our classes help students develop academic and social skills through gaming, engineering design challenges, and a wide variety of other cooperative exploratory activities, with opportunities tailored to the unique individual learning styles of each and every child.
It's time to level up our operations, expanding our capacity to meet the needs of students and their families throughout southwest Seattle. For the past year, we've been bringing the learning opportunities to the students; moving forward, we want to bring the students to the learning.
Access to reliable and affordable transportation remains one of the greatest obstacles for working families seeking quality after-school programming (as well as options for extended school breaks and holidays). We seek to bridge this gap, providing the essential link between home, school, and the many other places where opportunities for experiential learning and personal growth await.
What are the benefits of adding passenger transportation to our program?
• Students & families with otherwise limited transportation options will have much greater access to our programs and the learning opportunities that we provide.
• Reducing the hassle of coordinating drop-offs & pick-ups at often inconvenient times and locations, we'll be better able to accommodate working families and their busy schedules.
• Field trips! All the time! And because we'll take our fully-equipped and WiFi-enabled workshop with us wherever we go, travel time no longer means lost learning time.
• Through expanded partnerships with museums, libraries, art studios, maker spaces, etc., we'll be able to build a network of mutual support with organizations similarly dedicated to creating engaging and enriching opportunities for all learners.
What will the money from this fundraiser enable us to do?
• The biggest expense will be obtaining the necessary insurance coverage and professional licensing required for transportation of passengers per City, State, and Federal regulations. It's not cheap!
• As the well-being of our students is our number one priority, we will install passenger seating (including full three-point seatbelts) that meets and exceeds Federal safety standards.
• Once we've installed the seating, the bus must undergo a rigorous State-mandated inspection process before beginning operation as a licensed carrier.
• While we're engaged in this endeavor, a portion of the funds raised will go towards various related administrative costs and operational expenses. A full accounting will be made available on our website upon completion of this work.
