Operating as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, The Sunset Project hopes to establish a community focused on fostering creative advancement in Northeast Michigan, while also being a driving force for mental health awareness.

The Sunset Project focuses on individuals aged 16-23 seeking support for their creative passions and careers such as film, photography, graphic design, art, etc. with an underlying goal to connect struggling individuals with much-needed resources as well as pushing to end the stigma surrounding mental health in the region.

While planning to deliver grants and host a variety of creative arts-based contests, The Sunset Project is also working towards developing programs and events to spread our underlying mental health awareness message.

In its first year of operation, The Sunset Project is set to produce three main deliverables:

A Creative Endeavors Grant: Titled The Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant, this grant will provide the funds for individuals to grow their creative projects in the community. Individuals with passions and careers such as film, photography, graphic design, art, etc. will be eligible to submit an application for review by the TSP board. Applications will open in Spring 2022, with a winner being chosen in June 2022.

Arts-based competitions: These competitions will provide a platform for individuals to showcase their work and win valuable prizes while connecting with other like-minded individuals. The goal is for these competitions to bring in various outside applicants as well as professionals who can contribute to and benefit the community at large. These competitions will begin in Fall 2022 with more information coming in the following months.

Mental Health Awareness Program: This program will be created for high school students and presented in a classroom setting. Volunteers will share personal stories of mental health battles and connect individuals who are struggling to a network of certified mental health professionals both inside and outside of the school system.
