Hello, my name is Resa. I am a soldier in the Kentucky National Guard, a full-time diesel mechanic for the Department of Defense, and a full-time nursing student pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at Chamberlain College of Nursing.

As a busy single mother with a desire to pursue higher education, I found that my only option was to enroll in a completely online program.

Due to having a demanding schedule and a robust home life with pets and children, I found myself spending a lot of money that I didn’t really have to spare on hotel rooms to accommodate my remote proctored testing needs. As time passed, this became inconvenient and costly. I realized that I could save on hotel expenses by renting to own a repossessed office shed to place on my property.

As I began preparing for my shed delivery, the thought occurred to me that other remote students must also struggle with expenses related to the lack of sufficient testing locations in our area. I then decided to attempt making my study shed available to other students who may need a place to take exams remotely.

I am unsure what I will need to do legally, but I do know that to begin with, I would need to consult the municipality for zoning regulations, possibly consult a lawyer for liability issues, maybe run it by insurance to add some coverage, whatever needs to be done to protect myself and others to make this a viable option for struggling students.

I’d like to finish the interior, hook the electricity to my meter as it comes equipped with electrical, add heating and air conditioning, and find a way to provide WiFi to guests. I want to be able to continue to offer this testing venue for free to students and maintain the building for long-term continual use.

If my fundraising goes well, I have other ideas that would help students succeed. If my project takes off, I would love to add a “mindfulness” relaxation area that promotes taking breaks, being present in the moment, and supports mental and emotional wellness. All extra funds will be spent to maintain the building, cover any added electricity charges, add safety features like lighting and security cameras, furnish school supplies, provide learning materials/aids to students, and anything else that can ensure the success of students.

Some, if not all, of the project will slowly be paid for by my own means, but any help at all would surely speed up the process and allow guest use of the study quicker since my money is stretched pretty thin due to school and home obligations.

This project idea is just a start for what I want to accomplish. Eventually, I would like to own a larger cabin that is plumbing equipped to offer as a testing, study, and lecture location with divided soundproofed rooms that allow multiple online students to access the building simultaneously without disturbing each other.

Financial and education barriers have long impacted the town I live in. This fact, along with other factors, directly relates to the lack of economic viability. My town depends on small retail businesses and a niche annual celebration to survive. I believe that providing educational support to this town could change the trajectory of its vitality by creating a well-educated community capable of mitigating factors responsible for economic decline.
