The Strand

Please join us in making a difference? We are raising money to benefit the Dover Community, and any donation will help make an impact. After 100 years of hand changes, purpose changes and renovations, The Strand building has become a fixture in the Dover community. The current Strand Dover team has big plans, but we need your help to achieve them. We’re currently raising funding to begin phase 1 of our updates and restoration to our century old home, and this includes rebuilding our dance floor to reflect the 1940’s heyday of the theater and add additional rooms to help us provide bigger and better productions in the future. The project would be to remove current temporary dance floor, lowering the original floor to create a 1940 type setting and also making it a combination dance floor and VIP section. A green room will added below the stage for stage performances. The estimate is only $100,000 to bring hope to dreams of becoming a star. The first step is to bring in a team of engineers and draw up a floor plan to present to the town for approval. This estimate is approximately $10,000.  We Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that is once again becoming a staple for memories, culture and the Arts.

Dover New Hampshire Multi Arts Center. Opening day for the Strand Theatre was September 22, 1919 for movies and vaudeville. The opening movie was Daddy Long Legs, a 1919 film starring Mary Pickford. In 1923, the Strand was converted to movie only and also, in 1928, broke the silence by showing the first talky film in NH with the Alias Jimmy Valentine. In early 50's Robert Wagner came to the Strand to promote one of his movies. In 1955 premiered The McConnell Story about a Korean conflict pilot ace, he was native to Dover, NH. From the first Stand that opened in 1896 in Australia to about 1930, 2000 Strand Theatres popped up around the world. Currently, there are only 93 left still putting on performances and we are the 5th oldest.

Struggling to keep the Strand alive, remodeling in 1987 converted the balcony to 2 smaller theaters, increasing number of screens from 1 to 3. In 2009 the Strand was auctioned and became home to 2 churches until 2011.

July 2015 marked the rebirth of the Strand going back to it's root with performances and movies. The first step was to remove the 20'x30' screen to open up the stage again. Our Facebook

The next 2 years proved challenging to show the community the Strand was back providing quality entertainment and performing arts. Now a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, upgrades continued with increasing the dance floor to 1152 sq ft, the addition of theatrical lighting, complete sound system for concerts, theater, comedy, dances, seminars, fund raising and anything else that comes along. The addition of an adult and children theatre group has been the most recent improvement.

To date the Strand has hosted over 132 events with 47 just in 2018 and as of June 2019 has already had 38 events and over 100 events by the end of the year. Some of the events include: Of course, classic movies, masquerade ball, dance and music recitals, comedy, dueling pianos, live theater performances, family pumpkin carving, community open stage, bands, paranormal investigations. We have hosted seminars with world champion dancers, birthday parties, wedding receptions, Christmas parties, filming venue for movies and music videos, just to mention some. The Strand is well on the way to becoming Dover's mini Broadway.

According to Best Things New Hampshire the Strand is in the top 9 Best Historic Theater in NH.
