Our dearest friends, our family in every way that counts, Nicole Fitzgerald and Rick Steil, have suffered an unimaginable loss in the Palisades fire. Their home since 1993, which was not just a house but a sanctuary of love, laughter, and community, is gone. This tragedy has left them without their refuge, their nest, their workplace. For over 40 years, they have been more than friends—they are our chosen family.

Nicole made it her mission to empower young women in the community, whether it be finding them a job so that they could support themselves financially, or offering their home as a safe place to stay when life brought them to their knees. Rick, the beloved photography teacher at Pali High, has inspired countless students with his passion, creativity and dedication. Together, Nicole and Rick have always been the warmest, welcoming hearts of every gathering, opening their doors to all with unmatched generosity.

I want to acknowledge that there are SO MANY people who have lost everything or been affected by these devastating fires.
