Synopsis:

After pulling herself out of a mental health crisis, 22 year old Emmy now finds that her whole world has moved on without her. When the closest person in her life, her sister Reena, decides to move on too, Emmy finds herself overwhelmed as she enters a completely new phase of her life. During the night of Reena’s going away party, Emmy has to face everything she’s missed out on over the years, tempting her into the same hole she worked so hard to get out of. Emmy traps herself in her own demise when she purposely ruins an aspect of her sister’s performance that will occur later that night. While holding the secret burden of her actions and finding herself isolated amidst her sister's successes, Emmy has an unlikely reunion with an old classmate, Lucas, the only other seemingly alienated person at the party. Emmy struggles to balance the social and emotional load of the party: Opening herself up, meeting Reena’s friends, finding a potential crush, all while simultaneously trying to swallow that this may be one of the last times spent with her sister.

Hi there!

Our names are Priscilla Witt and Camilla Zaidee Bennett and we are working to fund our debut feature film. THE STATE OF CERTAINTY follows Emmy, who is desperately trying to piece her life back together after isolating herself for the past couple years. When she’s faced with her sister’s departure, she must decide if she’s going to embrace this change or run away from it like she always does. This story navigates themes of mental health, sisterhood, and what it means to come of age far later than the rest of your peers.

Although our story focuses on the life of a contemporary young woman, making mistakes, navigating change, and combating your own self destruction is a human experience we all share regardless of who we are.

For us, The State of Certainty is the kind of story we wish we had when we were growing up and faced with similar changes. In a way, this film acts like a love letter to all of us finding ourselves stuck in a big transitional period.
