UPDATE (Dec 15):
David has been accepted into the Transplant program and is awaiting a liver. His family has found housing in Vancouver until the end of February, but the cost of rentals in Vancouver is enormous, plus traveling back and forth to the hospital, and life in general in the city is so expensive. With no idea of when they’ll be able to come home, every single penny counts. Thank you all so much for your kindness and generosity. We know that life is expensive for everyone right now.
UPDATE:
Shortly after this was posted, the Squairs received some amazing news - David was being sent to Vancouver for transplant assessment. They flew out literally 30 minutes after receiving the news. After a full day of testing and assessment, an official decision about his candidacy is pending. One thing they did find out, however, is that should he receive a transplant he would have to stay in Vancouver a minimum of 12 weeks, and he would need full time support. And while there is some financial support available, it’s not nearly enough to cover the enormous expenses that will quickly build up.
Original Post:
It has been a gut-wrenching five months, and the pain seems to stretch longer with each passing moment. In July, our dear friend Nicole & David's world was shattered when David was admitted to Vernon Hospital, engulfed in agonizing pain. The nightmare began with uncertainty, as doctors struggled to identify the source until, at last, the chilling diagnosis - Necrotizing Fasciitis, a flesh-eating bacteria. Since then, it's been a rollercoaster of surgeries, ICU stays, and prayers.
Nicole, his two daughters, Keslyn (12) and Phoebe (8), and his parents and siblings have stood vigil, witnessing the relentless onslaught of pain that has become David's constant companion. As the days blur into each other, hope clings to fragile threads as they await a window of stability in his health to facilitate a transfer to Vancouver for assessment by transplant teams. David needs a new liver and kidney, a lifeline dangling just out of reach.
It's been 5 months since Nicole could earn a paycheck, yet the bills persist and multiply, especially with the daily commute to Kelowna General Hospital. Gas money alone is running through their savings.
And now, it's Christmas. The dream of a cozy holiday at home has shifted to making the best out of a cramped ICU room. Not ideal, but they're doing their best to keep spirits up.
We started a GoFundMe 5 months ago, never thinking it would stretch this long. But here we are, knocking on your virtual door, asking for support. Every little bit counts.
It would mean the world if you've got a few bucks to spare. Let's help this family bring some holiday cheer into that hospital room.
Thanks a bunch for considering. Wishing you all a warm and joyful holiday season!
