The South Sudan Water Project

We are the 6th grade class at the Brandeis School of San Francisco. We recently read the book A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. This book tells two stories. One is a fictional account of a girl named Nya, who must walk 12 miles a day for water that is neither safe nor clean, and often causes health problems. This story is inspired by so many real stories of girls and women in South Sudan, who often are in charge of this burden. The other story tells of one of Sudan's former Lost Boys, Salva Dut. His story is real, and amazingly Salva survived all the trials he was faced with, including walking thousands of miles towards refugee camps. He founded the organization Water for South Sudan. They drill wells in South Sudan, bringing clean water to rural communities. Therefore Salva and his team are also bringing opportunities to these people. During the time they would usually spend fetching water, they can do things such as go to school, and play with other kids. Things we take for granted. We can just turn on a tap and get fresh water. 780 million people around the world can't. The world water crisis is real, and not just far away, with the Flint Water Crisis, California drought, and the recent Texas freeze in mind. This issue is important to us because water is something we have always just considered part of the background. Something everyone had. Something that we would never run out of. We now realize that is not true. So let's help raise the money needed for this well, because remember: One well is all it takes to change one thousand lives.
