I am a writer, educator, cultural worker, and avid meditator that has been traveling between Kenya and Nigeria for the past seven months. In my time on the continent I have:
1. Lectured at the American International School of Abuja in Nigeria as their guest author
2. Developed a workshop for creatives in Mombasa on excavating and healing our pasts through theater and the written word.
3. Finished the first draft of a full length play and had a reading at The Theatre Company
4. Completed a residency at the Aroji Drama Academy to work on my novel entitled the Soil Below, a story following four generations of Nigerian women grappling with ancestral trauma, mental health, and assimilation.
5. Made great connections to people and communities that I will never forget.
Now, I am winding up my travels and have amazing creative content in the works! I will be working with Black Travel Go on a documentary series to highlight how one can heal through travel and culture. It has taken me so long to embrace my journey as an artist and writer committed to creating art that encourages important dialogues about family dynamics, health, surviving, and thriving! Your contributions will support airfare, filming and the final interviews I hope to conduct before I leave. My stretch goal to make this trip sustainable is $3000. Thanks for helping me get there!
Giveaways:
RUNNING
To show my appreciation for your donation, I will give you a free copy of my e-book, Running, a novelette that is a chapter in The Soil Below, and was published separately through The Book Smugglers. The story follows protagonist, Arit, a first generation Nigerian girl coming of age in America and trying to find a life that honors who she is. Just contact me after you've made your donation and I'll send you a free copy!
CREATIVE LIVING WITH ITORO
And finally, here is a short video that is a part of my Creative Living video series. This first video reflects on the word, Surrender and was filmed at the Edward Albee Foundation. Here is a creative offering that I hope brings you a bit of joy!
